Welcome, everybody, to week two of the North Marion Athletics Update.
The North Marion Athletics Update is a weekly show
highlighting the storylines, successes, upcoming events, and more of all Huskies Athletics this year.
This week was an exciting week for North Marion sports
as the first competitions of the 2011-2012 school year were held.
Thursday kicked off the athletics season at North Marion as the Boys and Girls Soccer teams competed in a jamboree at North Eugene High School.
Exciting things happened during the jamboree for both squads.
The girls team played to a tie against the reigning 5A State Champions, the Summit Storm.
The boys team ended the day with a win, a loss, and a tie.
They defeated Crescent Valley for their lone win. The Huskies tallied two goals in the game, and two exciting new players made their debuts for North Marion.
They were both involved in a big play.
Sophomore transfer Allejandro Herrera centered the ball to Senior Danny Robles who headed it in for the Huskies first goal.
The second came when Crescent Valley scored on themselves.
Rueben Vargas was a huge defensive presence in the Huskies victory. The freshmen starters were also key in their varsity debuts.
Remember, these games were just for practice, and do not count towards the soccer teams' regular season records.
Cross Country competed in a night meet at Wilsonville High School, also on Thursday.
It was a 3k, which equals to about 1.9 miles.
Hannah Johnson was the first North Marion girl to finish, as she was also among the race's top finishers with a thirteen flat.
Hannah Surcamp, was not too far behind, finishing with a 13:30.
The top North Marion finisher, in terms of boys, was freshman Ruben Santana.
The North Marion football team took on Cascade on Friday night. The Huskies first half passing attack was outstanding.
as senior quarterback Jeremy Parkinson picked up 200 yards through the air in just the first half.
Zach Williamson, Haden Pyatt, and Jaden Davis all had meaningful receptions for the Huskies.
However, North Marion could not contain Cascade's improved running game, as the Cougars racked up 307 yards on the ground
on their way to a 34-7 victory.
Quarterback Jeremy Parkinson suffered an injury in the third quarter when he scrambled for a sizeable gain.
Parkinson did not re-enter the game.
We have heard that he broke his collar bone, and is possibly done for the season.
and junior quarterback Wyatt Moore will be stepping in to fill the void.
As a member of the varsity football team, I feel like Wyatt's a good quarterback and I have no worries that he will pick up the slack and help us out throughout the season.
The Huskies cheerleading squad was in action on Friday night also. Keeping the well-traveled group of Huskies fans into the game.
The volleyball was the lone team without a game this week. But they were hard at work practicing for a tough slate of matches this upcoming week.
The fall sports season is now into full swing, as all sports have competitions this week.
On Tuesday, girls volleyball will get their season underway as they travel to Turner for a meeting with Cascade.
On Wednesday, with school starting, Cross Country also travels to Tualatin to compete in the Tualatin Invite beginning at 3:30 PM.
The Varsity Girls soccer team will host the first game of the season as Westside Christian comes to town for a 4PM kickoff.
Varsity volleyball has their first home match of the season, against Banks, an OSAA Endowment game beginning at 6:30PM in Gym 1.
Then on Thursday, it's the boy's turn to host a soccer game, as the varsity squad will also take on Westside Christian, a 4PM Varsity start and a 5:45PM JV Start.
The Volleyball will play for the third consecutive day on Thursday, as the girls will host Yamhill-Carlton. Varsity plays at 6:30PM while the JV plays at 5PM.
JV2 Football will see their first action of the season, as they travel to Scappoose to play the Indians at 6PM,
a precursor to Friday's matchup, when Varsity heads to Scappoose to play the Indians.
North Marion hopes to rebound from last week with junior quarterback Wyatt Moore at the helm.
The two previous matchups between these clubs have been thrilling games. We hope you will come out to Scappoose to watch.
Then on Saturday, the volleyball team continues their busy week with another trip to Cascade to participate in the Cascade Invitational.
Cross Country is also in action over the weekend, as they travel to McMinnville to compete in the daunting Trask Mountain Assault,
beginning at 11AM.
