안녕하세요. Hello everyone. Welcome to Let's Speak Korean. I have a feeling this
is going to be a very good day, I'm in a very good mood. I'm your host, Lisa Kelley. Hello
there.
Hello there. Usually she's all friendly. but not today. 안녕하세요. I'm Stephen Revere,
and I'm going to try to coach you through the Korean language. And we've got two students
who will be helping us as well.
안녕하세요, Naomi입니다. Hi, everyone. Hi Nithi. I'm so glad to see you again. And
like Koreans say. 열심히 공부 하자.
Hello everyone, I'm Nithi.
Good, good, introduce yourself, go ahead.
Hello everyone, I'm Nithi. 열심히 공부합시다.
Very good, they prepared that. 열심히 공부합시다. Let's work together well, let's study hard
today. And actually, I wasn't trying to be rude, you actually look really nice today.
I like that shirt.
Thank you very much. We've got nice colors here. I like the color scheme.
Guess what? Yesterday I went out after the show, me and Stephen, we decided to have dinner
together, and he invited a whole group of girlfriends. And let me tell you, they were
pretty cute looking girls...
My major was teaching Korean as a second language, my master's degree. Everyone in my major's
a woman. There are four men in my major, and forty-six women.
Okay. 에~ in Korean means, yeah, right. Actually I was catching on to the fact that you were
sitting next to a girl the whole time.
The one with the glasses? Yeah, she's very cute, but she's just a nice friend.
That's what they all say: just a friend. Well anyways, let's go check out what we'll be
learning for today.
Let's Do It
여자 친구가 누구야?
모자를 쓰고 있는 사람이야.
Not only will we be able to learn, that's just a friend, we're also going to learn,
who is your girlfriend. And here, 여자친구 means girlfriend, but it can also mean just
a female friend or an acquaintance.
I want you guys to start off by just repeating thi여자친구가 누구에요? Who is your
girlfriend?
여차 친구가 누구에요?
여자 친구가 누구에요?
Nithi just said this like it's so foreign to him, come on! And you if you to say boyfriend
you can say, 남자 친구가 누구에요?
남자 친구가 누구에요?
남자 친구가 누구에요?
Much better, good job. Notice we've gone over 누구 before. Who. I think we also taught
you, when you hear someone knock at the door. what do you say? 누구세요?
And 누구야 is the low form. We're all friends, we'll use the low form today. 누구입니까
is the really high form. 누구세요 is probably the thing you'll hear most on the street,
with people who don't know each other. 누구에요?
And we can also ask this to each other - 누구에요. Like, Naomi, who is this? 누구에요? And
you can say Steve입니다. We've learned this before, it's pretty easy.
And the answer to this was, the person wearing this. The person doing this. You can use this
in this form - add a verb, and -고 있다. It means someone or something doing whatever.
Fill that for us.
Those of you who are familiar with grammar terms, this is the present continuous tense.
And what you're going to do is talk about what somebody is in the middle of doing. 하고
있다.
They are doing something, someone is doing something. We've gotten situations quite often
where there's no subject. 하고 있어요. I'm doing it. You don't have to put your name
in there, if you want to say I'm doing it right now. 하고 있어요.
Are you repeating?
Go ahead, repeat it once.
대답하고 있어요.
I was trying to get you to say 하고 있어요. Are you repeating? 하고 있어요.
Very good. One more time. 하고 있어요.
And I'm reminded of not this continuous form... but we add the ㄴ to the end of the verb,
right?
Yes, it gets even more complicated, this phrase does, doesn't it? We've got 쓰고 있는
사람. this is how you talk about it with the verb, what someone is doing.
So, she is the person wearing glasses. It's kind of like English, isn't it? The person
wearing glasses. And notice the verb for 'to wear' is 쓰다.
Sadly, in English wear is the same for everything, but in Korean there are many different verbs
for to wear. For a hat and glasses you use 쓰다. So, 안경을 쓰는, 안경을 쓰고
있는 사람.
Okay, let's try the continuous form. Today's response was 모자를 쓰고 있는 사람.
모자 is hat. The person wearing the hat is the person. 모자를 쓰고 있는 사람이에요.
or 이야.
모자를 쓰고 있는 사람이에요.
모자를 쓰고 있는 사람이에요.
Okay. And let me give you two more to practice here, because like I said, different 'wear'
for different things. To wear clothes - shirt or pants - you say 입다. So you're going
to say 입고 있는 사람. And then for shoes you say 신다. 신고 있는 사람.
Let's try that one.
First how about a shirt? We'll practice with 티셔츠. 티셔츠를 입고 있는 사람이야.
티셔츠를 입고 있는 사람이야.
티셔츠를 입고 있는 사람이야.
구두 would be shoes. 구두를 신고 있는 사람이야.
구두를 신고 있는 사람이야.
구두를 신고 있는 사람이야.
Very good. Your first 를 was a little tough but the second you corrected. The pronunciation's
a little tough on that one.
All right, let's go over to Wrap It Up and see what we've studied today.
Wrap It Up
Stephen! 여동생이 저기 있어?
응, 티셔츠를 입고 있는 여자야.
그럼 저기 모자를 쓰고 있는 사람은 남동생이야?
아니, 우리 형이야.
Okay, we heard a lot of expressions we covered a few lessons ago. I'm really happy we heard them again.
We heard 동생, and 우리 형. Older brother. And 우리 we covered before, it means our
brother, our sister, 우리 Stephen...
Once again, interesting, for your family you say our brother, when you're talking about
your family not just my brother. And we also heard 남동생, that's how you say younger
brother. and if you want to say younger sister, you say 여동생.
Okay, let's practice what we've learned today. The first expression was 여자 친구가
누구야? or 남자 친구가 누구야?
여자 친구가 누구야?
남자 친구가 누구야?
L Okay. It is the person wearing glasses, or it is the person wearing the hat. 모자를
쓰고 있는 사람이야.
모자를 쓰고 있는 사람이야
안경을 쓰고 있는 사람이야.
Very good. Watch your 받침 - 안경을.
안경을. Very good.
And real quick quiz before we end today. Tell me which verb goes with which object, okay?
We already said 모자를 쓰다, and 안경을 쓰다, right? So let's try some of the other
ones. Watch.
차다.
차다. No 받침. Just 차다.
Okay. 신발.
신다.
Very good. Okay that's pretty good for today. Thank you for joining us at Let's Speak Korean.
I hope it was very rewarding for you today, I felt it was a pretty good lesson. Please
join us again next time. Bye-bye.
