What's up Fellars!
Welcome back to another episode from TastySauces.com. I am your host Billy D.
And we are doing some more barbecue sauce tastings today and lately we have been giving a lot of love to the people
down South so
I figured I would take it up North and try a couple of barbecue sauces up there.
The first one we have is out of Chicago and it is Sweet Baby Rays
and they will be going head to head with Jack Daniels Original Member Seven Recipe. I am sure
you have all tried this one but
I figured we might as well give it a little review.
So we will start by looking at the Sweet Baby Rays.
Their from Chicago. This was started in 1985 by two brothers
The name Sweet Baby Rays is actually one of the nicknames of the guys when he played
basketball in high school so
he must have been a pretty good athlete to have that name
Now as far as the sauce, in 1985 this was a family recipe
They entered it into a national competition where they competed against seven
hundred competitors and came out in first place so
ever since that competition they have been selling this sauce door to door and
you have probably seen it in your major grocery stores as well.
So I wanted to give it a little check out.
As far as the ingredients,
it's a pretty simple recipe that is not too complex but its got corn syrup, little vinegar,
definitely tomato based
from the color of it
its got a little starch
a little pineapple juice so that should give a little sweetness to it
it has also got some garlic, sugar and other seasonings in there.
Let's go ahead and give it a try.
I just did a little cooking and got a little
grilled chicken I just got of the grill so
let me slather some of this on their
It has got a nice
thick sauce, this stuff isn't too runny
nice little brown color
very sweet
If I had a sweet scale this would be going off the charts
I like it a lot you can definitely taste that sugar in there
Not tasting a whole lot of spice but definitely very, very
sweet
it almost gives you a toothache
This is good stuff.
personal preference scale
I am going to give this one a 4.5 out of 5
if you'd like the sweet stuff you are definitely going to like this stuff.
As far as
the spicy/heat level, this is relatively mild since it is so sweet
I would give it a 1 on the spicy scale
Definitely recommend it with the 4.5 on there.
Now, looking at Jack Daniels Barbecue Sauce
you know everyone has probably tried this, they have had it at TGIFridays but
I wanted to give it a taste test to help compare it to all the other stuff we have had.
This stuff is actually owned by Heinz Company so
you know there is definitely going to be some Heinz
ketchup in there.
They also got some white vinegar,
salt, molasses, water, starch
national hickory smoke, a little mustard flour, caramel color
and a slew of other things.
Let's go ahead and jump into it.
It has got a nice brown
thick sauce
a little browner than the Sweet Baby Rays
Not as sweet
but definitely a little smokier, its got
more of a balanced flavor
so this would be a good one
if you are not into the sweets and just want a good all around barbecue taste
pretty good stuff. I am
leaning a little bit more towards the Sweet Baby Rays BBQ Sauce so
I am going to give this one a 4 out of 5.
but definitely good stuff
As far as the spicy scale,
this one is relatively mild as well so this one is going to be a 1.
Today, Sweet Baby Rays won but
I'm sure we got some fans of Jack Daniels BBQ Sauce so if you guys think differently, definitely speak up
and don't forget to tune into our next episode.
Thanks guys. Bye.
