Striking Teachers Sing Argentine, National Anthem at Buenos Aires Rally
Thousands of teachers and activists flooded the streets of Buenos Aires on March 22 to
call for higher wages and to show support for Argentina’s public school system.
President Mauricio Macri commented on March 21 that the country suffered from a “terrible
inequality between those who can go to private school and those who have to fall into the
public school system,” worsening the ongoing labor dispute with teachers’ unions, Telesur
reported. Protesters at the strike held up signs emblazoned
with slogans such as “Caer En La Publica” (Fall Into Public Schools), chanting that
they had proudly chosen the public school system rather than “fallen” into it.
This footage shows protesters marching and singing the Argentine National Anthem.
Buenos Aires teachers have demanded a 35 percent pay boost in order to make up for Argentina’s
inflation rate, which is expected to reach 20 percent this year, Telesur and Reuters
reported. Credit: Twotter/adrianitaDyJ via Storyful
