Hi there, my name's Pete Rice and I'm a Safety Engineer and Industrial Hygienist for ClickSafety
and it's going to be my
objective here over the next few minutes is to share with you
different types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is very important on construction job sites;
often times when we're out there in the field that's about all we have to protect
ourselves from a hazard.
In the real world, what we prefer is to use
engineering controls: ventilation... or isolating a hazard
or totally enclosing a hazard
if we can possibly do so; followed by what's called administrative controls, or
work practice controls,
such as frequently rotating
a person in a hazardous environment, like a high noise area,
maybe using two or three employees, rotating them in.
But often times
in construction we just don't have that luxury and so we'll rely on
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Starting from the top down
PPE, and there's all kinds of PPE to protect all kinds of parts of your body,
but we'll start off with head protection;
there's different kinds of head protection with different models. This
would be a standard hard hat,
considered a Class B type of a hard hat. We'll talk about this more a little bit
later.
We also have eye protection -
there's different kinds of eye protection depending upon the hazard.
On most construction sites what you will see is simply impact
resistant lenses.
We'll also talk about that in a different tailgate topic.
We'll also see high-visibility clothing for example, this...
it's called a Class 2 or a Type 2 type of vest. You'll see it's
high visibility.
And there's 3 different kinds and we'll also talk about this in a different tailgate
topic.
By the way, this is considered flame resistant.
And there's different kinds: flame resistant and not flame resistant.
To protect the hands, obviously, often times we'll use gloves; for example, these are just your standard
leather gloves
that I'll carry out into the field, protect against sharp objects.
And you'll see these well-used safety boots; there's different kinds of boots out
there - these are
steel-toed.
And then often times if it is a noisy environment, we'll use ear protection.
These are simply my plug type -
foam plug type
and then also if it's a dusty environment with just nuisance dust, we
have different kinds of nuisance dust masks that we'll use.
So this would be the kind of standard suite
of PPE you would see on most construction projects.
