Actually this car belonged to
a cousin of mine
from the Class of '35, which was my father's class
and it had been in every P-rade in his class
for a thousand years, it seems
and when he was about 80 years old
one time after the P-rade I said
Uncle Henry, we know a good place where you could throw that car if you ever get tired of it
and the next week he sent us the
keys and the registration and said
it's yours for free just make sure it goes in all the P-rades it can
It's pretty classic. It's a 1972 VW beetle, and people love it.
Well, you have to understand the purpose of this car isn't the car, it's to
carry the governor. So this is Governor Belcher's state car.
This is the governor's 347th birthday
He's allowed to come back to life
once a year
He built Nassau Hall, as you may know
so he stands in this space here
and is able to
you know, bow to an adoring crowd
It was my wife's idea, actually
I was looking for a new car
We'd been to England to see our son a lot
and the Minis are all painted up different over there, and so we bought one
Maxine said, "Get it black, so we can do something with it."
I have one guy who's Class of '63. He had me put a little rider in my will that he's got right of first refusal.
