welcome back down hard here with you and Tom Weiss is in studio with these the
president climate prices
solutions the website ride for
forr ride for renewables dot
organ and Tommy just completed a 400 85
my album bicycle ride to Bray's wariness about Keystone XL pipeline is that a
good
snapshot summary and what's up yeah
in is specifically the southern leg of the Keystone XL pipeline
yeah molinar I like has been there for quite some time yet whether the Keystone
one
project was built in 2010 and that's what TransCanada get ready to tap into
with
the southern leg of the Keystone XL pipeline in so
but the northern my when we talk about the normal I got a whole separate
project
mom what what happened I caught bait-and-switch
arm back in 2011 on November 2011 President Obama made the big
pronouncement who's going to lead decision
on the Keystone XL cross-border permit
are that's why a lot of environmental we're celebrated
could declare victory it was not a victory who is only a delay
amber what he did here's the bait switch part are
few months later President Obama flew down to Cushing Oklahoma
the pipeline crosses the world and he directed his administration to
fast-track construction up the southern lag
which is they're gonna tap into the key someone which is built in 2010
and that gives him something like is the one that goes down to the Koch brothers
refinery in
and in the Gulf Coast and Gulf Coast yes in so in that back is
a chance can access to the refineries and
the ports which is what they want more than anything right because they want to
get that
that they want to get that carbon I love this country
and get off to china England and been
the northern parts of South America Brazil I guess exactly where
wherever else they can after they ever find it exactly when only the poison
here in the United States
surer and end up the boys along the way because you know the first Keystone
pipeline am referring to the Keystone one
spill 12 times in its first 12 months about poration
while so we know this is common and you know I word is being treated as a
sacrifice earn
and the northern like that has to be stopped to but that has been the
what most the environmental gruesome in talking about how
that cross-border permit but one even talking about that the southern like is
now 95 percent completed
so we've got Texas large landowners like Michael Bishop
and Julia Trigg Crawford who are still right
fighting we can't I i think was really was on E with daryl hannah
on this program I I think you were your eyes and button that errol's been
amazing
she had she and she's really been working on this thing we're talking with
Tom Weiss
is present a climate crisis solutions right for renewables .org in crime a
crisis
my mid crisis solutions as website too right it does a Wii I own focus much on
it that's my business
arm and I am i doing a business cuz I'm in too busy to buy on the right here
decade ago so right for renewables .org is the website check it out and
Tom in Detroit and in Chicago
there are these huge piles hav
basically poisonous like almost call but not quite
its it still contains an enormous amount of carbon
aunt but it can't be burned in the United States because %uh violates
our our %uh Clean Air Act how did these
giant piles and and that's blowing over mostly poor minority neighborhoods
how did these giant piles a poison come to be
in Detroit and Chicago and other places in
in in the Midwest who tell me the story that's your you're talking %uh the pic
ok issue
my I'm not I have na na twelves steeped in that
Obama be quite high understanding is this is the this is what's left over
when you refine coal tars
the this this this kinda car stuff that we're bringing down from
from Canada that that the residual product that's left over is
because it's it basically by two minutes call you know that's as good as mine
right now is a row
yeah and it's their functionally powdering it makes it with water and
rate and some some the basically little bit oil and pumping it down the pipeline
and so when they when they refine it what's left over isn't just the normal
refinery output but it's this kind of fly ash toughen
its it's pretty imprimatur well it I just want to say this is
i'm glad you raised because that's another byproduct this whole process
pollen and the Gulf Coast just now going to be swimming in the stuff
although I gas you know there are countries where it's legal to burn this
stuff
you know like Lana and so way favor find it down on the Gulf Coast then they can
get it out at the United States because I sure the barge in it there
you better see it's that it's like we should be doing this yes I meet are sans
just is should be stopped period I mean we we can't be
mine tarzan's I mean we need to be enough fossil fuels
as quickly as possible we need transition like yesterday yeah
and so now there was there was a piece a a week or so ago we do
a show on it here where just the Koch brothers themselves
might make as much as a hundred billion are less
from the Keystone pipeline I mean they're not even worth that much
but its in no wonder that no wonder you know
the very people would fund the you know the Heartland Institute are these other
right-wing groups that are engaged in
aggressive climate change denial sure I mean you spend you spend a few million
bucks here and there even tens or hundreds of millions of dollars
to make hundred billion dollars rate
in in this is one other last and I mean this is a very
you know desperate act on the part the fossil fuel industry but it's a very
profitable one
obviously for them yeah yeah so what can americans do
well one thing is Americans can support
um are brave fellow Americans like Michael Bishop
and Julia Trigg Crawford not to Texas landowners who were
still duking it out with TransCanada
and with the federal government down in texas
so how they can support their legal defense funds
and you can find them on on the web other ways leonard
for your website for them I wanna put some up after the show
also their people seeking gonna ride for renewables .org yes starting tomorrow
I want heather's on my website for both both landowners but
they could get naked support their lawsuits I mean that's probably the
biggest thing
at this at this juncture and it's not like the so you know like calling your
elected representatives
might be a good idea well that never rose resemble harm
hey is just unfortunate how much oil money is
to pleasure in our pull together a lol really don't
ran a local holler or you know get the the local school to give you the
gymnasium for the night and then invite locum
your your elected state senators state representatives year US Congress
person whoever may be I invite them to show up and if they don't show up you
know put up
cardboard on me up them and debate them by I love that idea
you know I and and the chair the covered any yes but this is actually not my idea
is Bernie Sanders idea he
in about the BlackBerry 300 the surface layer somebody call on whether I
from some some town in I think was oklahoma or something someplace where
they had some republican right-wing crazy who is that
member how's the represent his and they said you know i
you know I can talk to this guy can't lobby and he doesn't in IE
norse my phone call what do I do in Burney said read a whole
put out the nose is that he's invited you know give him a formal invitation
and if he doesn't show up
ditto debate a cardboard figure II don't know that was burned his exact words but
with something i do. it's yeah is great you know the
create create a town hall they will show up more often than not they
they your shame them into it well here's another thing people can do tom is
show up if the white house like we did yesterday we had a small
but incredibly committed band love climate justice leaders who are at the
white house white house yesterday
and we held up a banner other hand up big photo
Michael bishops property being destroyed by TransCanada then he soon XL pipeline
down in taxes yeah and the title was
President Obama's tar sands pipeline
because he approve this he owns it
yeah he owns it well and then she can you call the house comment line
yeah absolutely and and he could stop this
I mean you know if hit his administration conjure up a way to start
this pipeline
they encounter a boy stop it yeah although
you know the a it almost seems like the best thing to do right now
is to really really be pushing for a carbon tax
because on the big picture i think thats what is if you do that we can do
then they were gonna reach a point where they're going to start looking at other
other things to Roger this pipeline there were no it. water lines and
pipelines
yeah I read on her back because there's a there's a larger systemic issue years
from
as Tom Weiss die the Rev website is right for renewables not worth checking
