Hello Roberta, this is your very own Dutch genealogist reporting to you live from Leeuwarden
Hello Roberta, this is your very own Dutch genealogist reporting to you live from Leeuwarden
I'm currently standing before the house of
Bauke Douwes Camstra
You can see it's a rainy day
we just had some snow and it's now above freezing again
we just had some snow and it's now above freezing again
I'm now walking back to the archives and i thought I would take you along
I'm saying "I'm walking back to the archives",
Bauke would have been walking towards his pleasure garden
If we look to the right here
in the side wall of the house complex that he lived
in the side wall of the house complex that he lived
we see an interesting family crest that has the year sixteen hundred below it
I don't think this wall is that old but
it may have been that the stone was in the original house and they put it back in
these houses all have lovely names
these houses all have lovely names
like "de swarte arendt", the black eagle
this is "de Drukkery", the print shop, so that's not really a house name
but it's very nice nonetheless
he had some family names: "Van Wyckel"
and there we have "Sixma van Heemstra"
and there we have "Sixma van Heemstra"
so those are all Frisian names; haven't seen a Camstra yet
so here's a little side road
so here's a little side road
There are all these lovely arches and ornaments

now we're walking up to the royal house
now we're walking up to the royal house
this is where the Lieutenant, the Prince of Orange, used to live
these were his stables
so he had some posh neighbors, this Bauke.
Although the lieutenancy was over by then but it was still a very nice part of town
This is the lieutenant's palace
It's now called the "Princess' court". It's now used as a museum.

so we're now at the big square
used to be the church yard of the church we see in the back
used to be the church yard of the church we see in the back
there's the circus in town that's in front of the church
The angle of the church isn't my bad camera work; it's really that crooked.
and to the right, that's the building of Tresoar, the provincial archives of Friesland
and to the right, that's the building of Tresoar, the provincial archives of Friesland
and that's also where the pleasure garden of your ancestor Bauke was
here's where I end our little trip so I hope you enjoyed it and goodbye!
