In 2007, the United Nations announced that more than 50% of the world's population
now live in cities.
Therefore, the future of cities must consider the design
of the infrastructures that feed them.
Cities should not be viewed as static objects on a map, but as the ever
changing complex systems they actually are.
Therefore, viewing cities as systems and then designing them to follow the same
closed-loop ecologies of nature, will be the first step towards a truly self sufficient city.
New Urban Economies is the first step in a series of projects that explore and
address the idea of 'designing in' resilience.
It works on three core principles:
1. Communities working together;
2. Synergy: Where lots of small things have a much larger effect, and
3. Designing the infrastructure for not only cities, but the
communities that live in them.
Resilience is about going past technological dependence. It's also about
changing perceptions and attitudes toward the things we take for granted today.
So things like, where our food comes from, and what to do with the waste we produce.
When we can achieve this, we have begun to secure an urban future
for the benefit of all. Thank you.
