Solving Multi-Step Inequalities with Fractions, a la Shmoop.
Miniature Golf is huge up North.
A little more North.
There we go. Elves Tinsel and Sparkle are desperate to
win the Arctic Regionals and that trip to Barbados.
Because it's friggin' cold.
Tinsel finishes with a score of 10 over par.
Sparkle's score always gets divided by negative 5...
...because he has a handicap for being in the under 400 years old division.
In order for Sparkle to win, what does his score have to be?
We'll set up the problem like this:
Sparkle's score, or "s", divided by the handicap of negative 5...
... must be less than Tinsel's score of 10 over. Remember it's golf, so the lower number
wins.
Which answer describes Sparkle's winning score?
To solve for s, multiply both sides by negative 5.
Remember: if you multiply or divide by a negative, you must flip the inequality sign.
Therefore, "s" must be more than negative 50.
Well, wazzup answer D! Basically, this means Sparkle can wander around
the course, putting into jingle bell lake and landing in candy cane forest...
... and he'll be on the beach sipping egg nog in no time.
