The Diploma course is a hard course. We essentially have students coming to us, often, with a
fairly low level of English who are not very experienced with the culture. And, what's
happened in the past is, they have found it very, very difficult.
So what we wanted to do with the iPads is a couple of things. First of all, to increase
the crossover between the English and the subject classes so that the materials are
accessible in their English class and in their subject class. And also, to provide them with
more support for their language learning, their learning in general and allow us to
do new things.
If you're a teacher who wants to look at texts in lots of depth, then having the text on
the iPad, so you can keep going back to it, doing different things, and so the students
always have it, is a really big benefit. Obviously having the ability to record video and audio
is a massive bonus to English teachers as it lets students be more creative and it lets
students listen back to things they have made and identify the issues they have. So, no
matter how you want to teach, the ability to have internet access and that kind of resource
in the classroom with you can help.
It allows us to specifically teach certain types of study skills. It allows us to really
get into lots of depth with students when it comes to researching. What you can do is
what I did in class this morning, is spend the time looking at how to do that effectively.
Making sure that these kinds of things which are put in for them by this place and by university
when they go to second or third year. They know how to navigate through that. I think
that is a vary important skill that we are only able to teach because we have that online
connectivity in the classroom.
