What is inclusion?
Inclusion at Sailing Team Germany
What is inclusion?
Inclusion is a fairly new term
but means that everybody, everywhere should be included at all times.
For me, inclusion is the equal treatment of disabled and non-disabled athletes
both regarding their support and sailing itself.
That nobody is excluded because he looks differently, moves differently,
everybody should be able to carry out their sport the same way
Inclusion at Sailing Team Germany: What does it mean?
If a disabled person can sail that is really nothing extraordinary,
Formerly, this was known as "Integration".
Inclusion is when we sail on the same boats using the same material
against and with each other.
When we created Sailing Team Germany, there were about 100 athletes
about 20% of these were disabled sailors.
We want give everybody the chance to sail, disabled or not.
What many people don't know is that sailing offers many possibilities for inclusion.
We sail a German or a World championship against each another
without scoring disabled sailors separately.
Especially the 2.4mR ist suited very well to conversion for any disability.
For example, I use a hand and a foot steering system
because I lack the feeling in my feet a little bit when beating to windward,
which is a lot easier to adjust by hand.
As soon as a disabled person steps into a boat
he is no longer handicapped against anybody.
That there is no longer any difference on the water,
that one can compete against non-disabled sailors, against everybody,
that one can win against them.
