A familiar name has surfaced for who presidential candidate Mitt Romney may select as a running
mate — former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. But as CNN shows, she may be difficult
to convince.
“I’m saying there is no way that I will do this, because it’s really not me. I know
my strengths and uh Governor Romney needs to find someone who wants to run with him...”
Rice made those comments last month. Conservative website Drudge Report pointed to Rice as Romney’s
top possible VP pick, but media headlines remain skeptical. Many analysts also don’t
think she’s a good choice.
San Jose Mercury News says “Condoleezza Rice as Romney’s VP pick? No way, some conservatives
say” ABC News writes “Condoleezza Rice Still not Interested in VP Slot” and “Condoleezza
Rice stands by VP comment: ‘There is no way I will do this’. Fox News says “Romney
doesn’t need Condi Rice, he needs to stick to jobs and the economy.” And finally -- US
news writes “Four Reasons Pick Condi Rice as VP could Hurt Mitt Romney”.
The New York Times sums up a couple of reasons why Rice wouldn’t be a good pick for Romney.
“Ms. Rice has said that she supports the right of women to have abortions. … [T]hat
puts her at odds with Mr. Romney[.] … Selecting Ms. Rice as vice president would give Mr.
Obama’s strategists the opportunity to argue that there is little difference between the
kinds of advisers that Mr. Romney would pick and the kinds of people that surrounded President
Bush.”
So, both Rice and political analysts don’t think it’s a good idea for her to be VP.
Then -- why the storyline resurfacing? MSNBC hints it may be a diversion to recent questions
regarding the Governor’s involvement with Bain Capital.
“ … get off topic here at the end of the week? Well I think the timing was interesting
it was a very tough day yesterday—does that mean yes?—with the Obama campaign accusing
Romney potentially being a felon...”
But Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera thinks the news highlights the Romney camp’s focus
on the Latino vote, and their interest in a candidates with Hispanic ties.
“...uh Pawlenty from Minnesota, or Marco Rubio, Condi Rice, Kelly Ayotte? I’m not
racially profiling when I say the last thing the Republicans need is another old white
guy with a vared haircut...”
As it currently stands Rice has no interest and Romney doesn’t have a VP, but that’s
sure to change in the next month before the Republican National Convention in late August.
