Hello and welcome to NollKommaFem.tv with Schnille och Schmak.
We recently received a package from the British Isles, more specifically Scotland.
It contained a beer we think will be really interesting to sample.
We brough a picnic basket, containing one bottle BrewDog Tactical Nuclear Penguin,
packaged in a stylish brown paper bag. with a hand-drawn penguin and the number 32%.
This is currently the strongest beer in the world, distilled by freezing.
They took a 14 month double-wood aged imperial stout, stuffed it in an ice-cream factory at -20°C.
Since alcohol freezes at a lower temperature than water, the water freezes first, then you remove the ice.
You are then left with a stronger and more flavorous liquid. Kind of the opposite of making whisky.
Our plan is to sample this and see what it is! If you would take a glass.
Tactical Nuclear Penguin. There is a short description on the back, check the pics on the blog.
Our friend Ingo is here to help us with this tasting. We figured that 33cl of 32% beer and two guys would be a
BAD IDEA.
It has an exciting aroma. A mixture of a voluptuous imperial stout and a smoked Islay whisky.
There is a lot of smoke and raisins in the aroma.
The glass is fogging up since the beer is warmer than the air. (duh)
It is pretty dark, there is a bit of visible carbonation, when you swirl there is a little brown foam.
Only brown color, no red at all.
This was good.
Is this beer or liquor or whisky. It seems like a hybrid of a smoked whisky and a yummy stout.
It's like a smoky whisky with a big mouthfeel. Good resistance in the body.
And we have chocolate, coffee, dark berries.
The alcohol doesn't dominate the taste. Like Tokyo* the alcohol is balanced by sweetness and fullness.
Not at all spiky, but even, round and balanced.
You still feel the strength, but it feels nice now, with something warming in your belly.
- I feel a burning on the tongue. - In the back of the mouth.
Very easy to drink. Nothing that sticks out, a round beer. Pretty odd that they have succeeded with this.
Looks like there are small particles in the bottle. (There actually were small particles in the bottle)
We tried another famous very strong beer, Samuel Adams Utopias.
It is interesting but doesn't have that much in common with beer.
More a blend of a sweet dessert wine, like a Sauternes, and cognac.
This is clearly a BEER. The stout base is still present. This is a really strong beer, not a beer-like liquor.
Yes, that was a pretty good description! A strong beer, not just a beery liquor.
Another comparison would be a very strong port wine. It has all the components of a wine, but together with the malty tones, it is a beer.
- The chocolate tones aren't found in port wine. - Chocolate and coffee.
It is surprisingly smooth. They have been subject to quite a bit of criticism, the crazy Scots.
They like doing weird things, not always with a great result. It is the willingness to experiment that results in these great beers.
It is the courage to 'work' with the beer, to process and refine it that really is their strength.
Take whisky, that's really only tasteless alcohol, but it is barrel-aged and processed, which results an exclusive product.
This same thinking they have brought to beer. They take a brew, and do fun stuff to it.
They run it over the Atlantic to make their Atlantic IPA, they freeze it in an ice-cream factory to make this.
They find ways to make the product more exclusive and innovative. I think that is fun!
They take it further, they don't do the conventional, they think what can we do now?
Should we rate this? Yes.
Do you feel a creaminess? Yeah!
- Isn't that the remaining carbonization? - Feels a little fatty on the tongue.
I love it. It is among the most fun I have had. This is an experience (highest rating).
- If you can, try it. - Yes, it is worth the money, what does it cost?
£35 plus £40 shipping and handling. There is a rumor that it is coming to Systembolaget.
BeerSweden wrote that it is coming to Sweden, early next year. At a (hypothetical) price of 300-400 SEK, it is an easy BUY!
Buy it and share with a few friends. You won't be disappointed.
If it lands at 300kr, it would be around 700kr for the same amount as Utopias which was 1300kr.
This is a better value for money. More alcohol per crown. (APK)
A better product.
Rating?
I understand you giving it the highest, but I think I will stay at really great, (next highest).
I can't really explain why, except that I want to reserve the highest for when I try this again in five years.
I think it will get a lot better. It has everything that is required for aging.
High alcohol, a big body, and has a small sharp tone of chocolate. I think it will age well.
A really really good beer. They have made a beer which is fun. There is nothing negative about this beer.
Nothing in this beer is too much, it is well-balanced and nice. A nice body. Fantastic.
Thank you for watching. Cheers!
