Vasopressin receptor antagonists are a class of drugs that are commonly used to help increase
low sodium levels in the blood in adults with conditions such as heart failure and certain
hormone imbalances.
Vasopressin receptor antagonists help raise salt levels in your blood by removing extra
body water as urine.
Vasopressin receptor antagonists share a few common side effects such as thirst, dry mouth,
weakness, headache, and dizziness.
Some examples of medications in this class are Samsca, also known as tolvaptan, and Vaprisol,
also known as conivaptan.
Vasopressin receptor antagonists share a few common serious side effects. These medications
may make the salt level in your blood rise too fast. This can increase your risk of a
serious condition called osmotic demyelination syndrome, or ODS. Symptoms of ODS include
trouble speaking, swallowing difficulty, drowsiness, confusion, mood changes, involuntary movement,
and weakness in muscles of the arms and legs, and even seizures.
It is always a good idea to ask questions about your medication if you are unsure or
if you experience something out of the ordinary.
