So TheLocal which is a Swedish
online newspaper written in English
made a list of ten the words, ten Swedish
words you will not find in the English
language. Here we go.
the first word is ORKA which is a verb
telling you that you do not have the
energy to do something. The example is
do your orkar watch the video this
weekend? No I orkar inte.
Doesn't have anything to do with orcs.
The second word is HARKLA
which is that little
grunting noise you do before you
speak when you clear your throat or
dislocate whatever you have in there.
The third word is
HINNA which means to be on time
or to find time.
Will you hinna come to the cinema?
No, we hinna (hinner) not
The next word is the word BLUNDA
which is basically to close your eyes.
Did you see her walking?
No, I was blundade.
The fifth word is the word MYSA
which means in a way to
snuggle but also to cozying up with
yourself or with someone, or in the café.
Word number six is VABBA which is
a verb coming out of the abbreviation
V.A.B. which means VÅRD AV BARN:
to care for a child, which means that if
the child is sick you get to be home
with the kid.
And in Sweden you get paid by the
government to do that and that is
has become a verb: Vabba. To vabba.
Word number seven is DUKTIG
which if you go to Sweden you're gonna
hear a lot because it kind of means
you're good at something or you're talented
but it's used in sports where say a
girl is she's very duktig
whereas the guys are very good= BRA.
Yes bra is the word good in Swedish.
hahahahahahaha
Aren't you duktig?
Word number eight is the word
JOBBIG which is an adjective coming
out of the word JOBB which means job.
It basically means that something is
difficult or someone is annoying
or something is just
hard to do, troublesome.
To work was so jobbigt today.
That guy he is so jobbig.
It's very useful.
The ninth word is a double word. It is
GUBBE and GUMMA meaning old man or old woman.
Depending on how you say it, if you
say it like that with affection it means
something endearing. If you say gubbe
is like the old man who
yelled at you for playing with your
ball would outside of his yard.
But you can also say to the little
kid like a little girl, lilla gumman.
or little man, lille gubben in an
affectionate way.
or a little bit about and little man and
an affectionate way.
Here's a word which English is so
lacking when you talk about your
parents parents you say grandparents.
In Sweden we have four different
words for this and that is
MORMOR, MORFAR, FARMOR, FARFAR.
which means daddy-daddy daddy-mommy.
So it really specifies excactly
which one you're talking about. If you
talk about your mother's father
or mothers mothers.
And the other way around we when we say
grandchildren we say barnbarn.
So it's barn which is not a house,
it means children in Swedish
so barnbarn is grandchild
Okay, you have now become
slightly more of an internationalist by
knowing a few little cool words that
exist in Swedish but not in English.
