Hi this is Alexis with Ticketbust.com and this is Ticket Talk.
Word has gotten around, after the recent LA Times article about camera tickets, that LA
courts don’t report a person to the DMV if they fail to pay a Red Light Camera Ticket.
This has left many people thinking that this is a green light to ignore those red light
tickets.
Well, my advice to you is DON’T IGNORE THAT TICKET.
You see, a Red Light Camera Ticket is sent to the registered owner of a vehicle and if
the registered owner doesn’t pay, the court sends another notice stating an additional
$300 is owed if not paid within 10 days. After that the registered owner’s name is sent
to collections.
If you don’t pay in LA County your license might not be suspended, but you can bet a
collections agency will be harassing you and this could have a major negative impact on
your credit.
Also keep in mind that the court’s policy seems to be specific as to the registered
owner’s name that appears on the ticket so the court may not apply the same policy
if you are not the registered owner even if your name is on the ticket. If the court chooses
not to apply their policy to you then your license can be suspended.
LA Superior Court may be one of the only counties, if not the only county, having this policy.
Since it is a court policy that the court has elected to make, and they were not forced
to make, it could change at any time. So in choosing to ignore the ticket and let it go
to collections, you are taking a big risk because that policy could change without you
knowing.
Conclusion – DON’T IGNORE THAT TICKET, it will cost you more in the long run
