Hello, I'm Sarah and this is the weekly dive.
Wholefoods market recently announced that they would remove almost all unsustainably
caught seafood from their stores this month. They are one of several grocery store chains
to make commitments to improve the sustainability and traceability of their seafood. How do
you tell if the seafood you buy or order is sustainable? The Monterey Bay Aquarium and
the Blue Ocean Institute provide handy guides to help you make informed choices. They make
handy cards that you can keep in your wallet, which you can get through their websites.
They even make guides specifically for sushi lovers. You can also download the free "seafood
watch" or "fish phone" apps for your mobile devices. I have both!
Some local heroes recently rescued a young grey whale who had more than 50ft of fishing
net wrapped around her tail. The net had already trapped and killed a sea lion, a leopard shark
and other animals. The rescue operation took over 24 hours but luckily it seemed that the
whale would recover. Did you know that gray whales make a 6,000-mile
migration every year? They travel between their productive feeding grounds in the Arctic
and the warm lagoons where they breed and give birth. Thanks for joining us on the Weekly
Dive. We'll see you next time!
