>>Narrator: How to cultivate a community garden,
presented by DIY Network
and Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Garden Soil.
>>Matt: San Miguel Elementary School's community garden
is getting ready for some big changes.
>>Everyone: Community!
>>Mrs. Bergener: The community garden started about 10 years ago.
Our fruits and vegetables go not only to our classrooms,
but they also go to local families in the community.
We have a budget of about $150 dollars per year.
We do what we can!
But any help is greatly appreciated.
>>Matt: Well that's why I'm here.
>>Mrs. Bergener: That's fabulous.
>>Matt: You ready to get started?
>>Mrs. Bergener: Let's go!
>>Matt: Let's go!
We'll help with new soil, veggie plants, fruit trees,
and we'll even throw in some pavers.
>>Mrs. Bergener: Everybody's gonna get their fingers dirty.
>>Matt: You got a weed? Yes!
The smart choice for many community gardens
is creating raised beds.
Flowers, veggies and herbs all do well in them.
When they're raised about 8 to 12 inches
soil stays warmer in colder weather
and there's better drainage.
We can give all the raised beds a boost
with better soil.
Just by mixing two thirds of a specially formulated garden soil
with one third potting mix,
we'll get the best results.
We're gonna do two bags of Miracle-Gro Garden Soil With Moisture Control.
How many bags of potting mix?
>>Children: One!
>>Matt: This is what it's all about.
Giving back to the community.
Teacher: Can you say Sugar Snap Peas?
Children: Sugar Snap Peas!
>>Matt: Once everything is planted, you'll need to maintain.
Because raised beds loose moisture faster,
it's important to water regularly.
So this is Miracle-Gro Liquafeed
and it's plant food.
This is specially formulated for tomatoes, fruits and vegetables.
We got the tomatoes right here.
So this is gonna deliver it through the water,
into the plant, onto the leaves and the roots,
gonna make this vegetable garden thrive
all year long.
We want to make sure everyone can enjoy the garden.
You know how big these tomatoes are gonna get?
>>Student: Big!
>>Matt: Huge!
>>Teacher: It means a lot to them to be given something
and to be invested in.
>>Child: This is so cool.
>>Teacher: All these pavers are going to go in the garden.
>>Matt: How beautiful is this?
>>Tom: Hi Heidi, I'm Tom McCaskey, Scotts Miracle-Gro Company.
We're real excited to be able to help you
with the up-front cost.
And this is really exciting.
You've given these kids something to be proud of.
The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company likes to pay it forward,
and we've got a check for you for $5,000.

>>Mrs. Bergener: Our kids deserve it and thank you.
We're here for the kids.
Kids: We appreciate all the things you're doing for our garden.
This is so awesome, thank you.
>>Matt: One of the greatest things about my job
is that I can take my talents
and give back to the community.
