Each of us is committed to helping our students succeed, but sometimes, our practices create
inadvertent barriers along their journey to achieve their academic goals. Some will find
a way to persist, yet many others will not. Think about the differences between equality
and equity. This image might help. The graphic depicts boys of varying heights standing on
similar boxes to watch a baseball game over a fence. In the panel labeled "equality,"
we see that giving people equal resources doesn't result in their ability to achieve
equal outcomes. The panel labeled "equity," on the other hand, demonstrates that when
resources are shifted to account for differences, it results in equal outcomes for all. Equality
means offering everyone the same treatment and resources, whereas equity responds to
the unique differences among individuals and the barriers they face to reach the same outcome.
Let's learn more about this critical issue together. This year, Bakersfield College is
excited to launch our inaugural conference on student equity and excellence. Join us
for this informative and inspiring conference on Thursday, April 3, at Bakersfield College.
We will bring together campus leaders for a day of learning centered on the impact of
student equity on college success - including keynote plenary session with Kati Haycock,
president of The Education Trust. More details and registration information is available
online at www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/conference/equity2014. We hope to see you there!
