Developing your rap style is one of the hardest things to do, because the way that many of
us even become infatuated or begin to love rap is by listening to other people. The challenge
is by listening to so many other people, they leave an imprint on you. So, now when you
begin to write your own songs, you start to sound like somebody. And you may hear that
a lot. "Oh, you sound like Drake. Oh, you sound like Lil Wayne." Right? And that's okay.
You do need, sometimes, a path to follow and then you can take those influences and then
add your own twist onto it.
The key is to keep on going. You know, to get there you have to actually work on your
craft over, and over, and over again. And the more you kind of follow behind different
people and emulate people, you'll start to find out what resonates with you.
And by practicing and working on it and working on it, you'll eventually emerge from that
copycat kind of process. You'll start to find out who you really are and your voice will
come through. But, the key is to let yourself be influenced by those that came before you
and kind of become a spew, that you take all these elements that have influenced you and
then add your twist to it. And then you will find that your voice is what emanates through
it all and that's how you find your rap style.
