The Maori Crafar farms may be returned to Maori.
Ngati Tuwharetoa and Ngati Rereahu have agreed
to Shanghai Penxin's offer to sell the farms back to them.
Ngati Rereahu have stopped the protests and given up
the court cases against Shanghai Pengxin.
Yesterday, Shanghai Pengxin won the court ruling against the appeal,
but the company has offered the farms to iwi to purchase.
Hardie Peni from Ngati Rereahu has now agreed to meet on the offer.
Ngati Tuwharetoa and Ngati Rereahu representatives
will meet with Shanghai Pengxin tomorrow in Auckland.
Obviously the sale will be discussed,
but it's likely that they will barter over the price.
But Ngati Rereahu is rejecting the offered price of $66 million
that has been thrown around.
The Maori Affairs Minister, who led a delegation to China says -
They were here last week and they visited iwi with.
Shanghai Pengxin is not a bad company.
Of the 16 Crafar Farms, three are on the negotiation table,
and the iwi and company have begun discussions.
They wish to source milk for China's population.
We are their key to getting that.
The Pakeha farmers have stopped fighting over the farms,
but some believe it's only a matter of time
before the debate is revived.
