(child) Maple syrup! I think we can tap it.
(mother) I think so too. We'll tap this one, okay.
[light acoustic guitar music]
[sound of squeaky drill handle turning]
(mother) If we get two quarts of syrup, I'll be happy.
[sound of hammering in spigot]
(Dave) It's a chance to experience the environment,
it's a chance to see sustainable use of forest products
where the tree is still there when you're done.
[light acoustic guitar music]
(dad) Alright! One down!
(Dave) Did you have any sign of any dripping?
(man) Not yet.
(Dave) The weather is everything.
If you don't have warm days
and under freezing temperatures at night
you don't get a sap run.
[sound of sap dripping into pail]
[light acoustic guitar music]
[sound of lid being lifted]
[sound of sap being poured]
[sound of log thrown into fire] [sound of sap boiling]
(mother) We've got about 240 gallons of sap to cook down.
(Dave) You end up with practically nothing
when you're done boiling.
But that 'nothing' is pure maple syrup,
so it counts for a lot!
[light acoustic guitar music]
(Dave) Precious stuff here!
[sound of syrup pouring into jar]
(Dad) Mmmm! Mighty fine!
(child) Can I have some more?
(dad) No, not right now.
We'll have it tomorrow morning on the pancakes.
