Natasha Collins: When disaster strikes, thinking "we're just going to wing it" is not an emergency
plan. When you're prepared for any type of emergency -- whether it's a natural disaster
or terror attack -- you can ensure your family will be safe.
Part of being prepared is making sure you're tech ready. Have important numbers stored
in your phone labeled ICE: In Case of Emergency. If phone lines are down in an emergency, it
will be better to text loved ones instead of tying up phone lines with a call. Text
messages and the internet often work better if phone service is disrupted. Of course if
you're in an emergency, always dial 9-1-1. If you lose electricity, make sure you have
a car charger or a solar-powered or hand crank charger.
Make sure you bookmark important sites like the CDC, the American Red Cross, FEMA, the
National Weather Service and LG&E and KU. You can download the outage map to your laptop
or smartphone. Having a meeting place if your family is separated
is crucial. Think about saving your meeting locations on your phone's mapping device.
