all right this is going to be another beginner video
And we're going to model a simple city park bench
and this really is for...
beginners, someone who's maybe never modeled a game prop before
or has only done very basic modeling in 3d studio max
so to start off with, actually for this
prop, it's a simple, all it is just wooden planks
and a metal frame
so I actually went ahead and I made the texture first
so a lot of people...
are in the mind set that when you make a game prop you have to model it first
then unwrap it, then texture and they sort of get stuck in this workflow
that you have to do it that way
well for something simple like this I actually like to make the texture first
and then I'll kind of go back and unwrap and model at the same time
I think it's faster
and it's more efficient
and it's good for beginners to kind of get
uh... an idea
on how to model a game prop without a lot of complex unwrapping
so here's my texture
it's a 512 by 512
so you wanna make sure if you're doing uh... texture for a game engine that it's
a power of two
and if you zoom it, it's very simple it only took me five minutes to make
I took some wooden planks from cgtextures.com
and copied and pasted them here
and then I took some rusty metal
and I copy and pasted that here
and then I found a picture of a rusty metal plate
and I just pasted that down here in the bottom corner
and then the planks...
the texture already tilted across, so I didn't have to do anything to the planks
and then for the metal part, actually...
I used a filter, offset
and I offset the texture
and then i went ahead and fixed the seam in the middle so that the uh... the
metal part would repeat
across
and then I just went to uh...
image adjustments, levels
I pulled the levels in to make it a little more rich
and the I took out a little bit of the saturation
to make it look a little more worn down
and after I did that I just saved it as a tga
24 bit, there's not alpha channel
and then that was it
so uh... back to max
we'll go ahead and get started modeling the actual park bench
so let's start off by making the planes
actually, the planks from a plane
so plane
then I'm just going to draw it in the scene
and hit f4
so I can see my edges
uh... make sure you set the segments to one
length and width
and then then length we'll do 4
and the width we'll do 64
so that will be the wooden plank
and then now let's make the metal frame
so another plane
this one we'll do a length of 20
we'll do a width of 2
and then we'll just move it in place
and um... I'm going to actually make it curve up
so let's...
uh... come up to the modifiy tab
and then right click and convert that to an editpoly
so let's go to edge mode
select the back edge
then holds shift
and then just pull it up so that's gonna pull uh...
that edge up
kind of extract it
since this is an open edge
and then here you can kind of eye ball this
that's probably okay
and then now...
I don't really like the harsh ninety degree angle, so I want this to kind of curve up
like it's one
solid piece of metal that's kind of curved around
so I'll select this bottom edge in the corner
and then I'll go down to chamfer
click the settings box
and then I'll switch that to
2 segments
and then the amount, let's try...
let's try 3
uh... let's try 2
and the check box will apply the settings and now you have a nice little curve
so
uh... if you hit f4
you can see the chamfer gave me some hard edges here
which I want it to be smooth
so I'm going to go to polygon mode
select all the polygons
and then scroll down to smoothing groups
click on one
so that's going to put it all on one smoothing group so you can see it
smooths out
that curved part right there
so I got a plank
I got the frame
now let's make ah...
like a metal
box for the leg
so box
length, we'll do 1 and 1
and then height
let's try 12
and then
let's make this editpoly
modify, right-click, editpoly
uh...
so let's select the polygons here on the sides
anytime I model something I like to get rid of
things I don't need
so this is going to be stuck in the
bottom of the bench and this will be stuck in the ground
so I don't need these two
top and bottom polygons
so I'm gonna box select the sides
hit Crtl+i
that will get the top and bottom and then just delete those
so these are the basic pieces I'm going to use
to build my bench
uh... so let's unwrap these
so I'm just gonna select my wooden plank
Actually, let's select the metal frame because it's already in editpoly
I hit f4 to turn on the edges
and then just click attach so attach these two elements by clicking them
and then i'll just drop this down
and then we'll do unwrap
once in unwrap
uh... click this button, open uv editor so you can open the uv editor
so we have that open
and first we'll do the plank, it's just a plane so it will be the easiest so
select it
but one more thing I actually forgot
let's take this unwrap off
hit m for material editor
and then let's load...I did this before so I'll do it again
find a blank material spot in the material editor
so I'm going to name this "park-
-bench2"
and then diffuse, this is where you add your color map
uh... you can also, if you go down to maps you can also put it in here
so diffuse color
to select the slot
bitmap
and...
find your...
your texture, mine is called "parkbench-
-diff," for diffuse
click open
and then click here, the back button to go back to your material
so it's loaded
and that he can just drop and drop, so I can drag this material
and drop it
onto my object
and if you click the checkerboard, lightbulb button
that'll turn the texture on so you can see it in your scene
so I can close that
all right so now let's unwrap
put the unwrap back on
open up the uv editor
so this is the window where I can edit my uv's
since I already have a texture on it
I can go to checker pattern
I can switch to park bench
so that will put my texture in the background
so let's do the uh... wooden plank first so I'm going to go to unwrap
face
then select that plank
so this is how a plane
unwraps by default
so we're going to have to grab the free-form tool
let's just
shrink it up
and let's just put it on one of these plank sections
I'm gonna try to get it to fit
uh... vertically as best I can
if you hit f2
it will turn off selection so you can see what you're doing
so you can tell by the shapes of these little screws that it's a little stretched
so this is why I made my texture tile
so once I have it here
I can make it go off the edge and this is going to repeat
so I'm gonna hold shifts
just gonna pull this accross
and that looks about right, so I'm going to keep it there
actually I'm going to move it in the middle a little bit
so let's do the metal frame
we'll select this
just hit f2 again
and get all of our polygons
so I'm gonna do...
tools
mapping
and flatten mapping
so that's just going to flatten out all the polygons
so let me select those again
and this is what it gave me
so I want to be one continous piece of metal
so I don't want any seams like you can see here
so I'm going to stich this back together
so uh... if you click an edge
the other edge it connects to will turn blue
so I select that
and if you click the stitch button
the last one
it's going to bring that over and stich it together
so that one continuous piece, a metal piece
Just gonna move him up
and put him in this metal section
So I'm just going to scale it down
once you start scaling it you hit Crtl
that'll make it uh...
the right proportion
so that's, that's fine
and metal box, so for the leg
select all of these polygons
and I'm going to do another flat mapping
mapping, flatten
so these here really aren't that important so I'm gonna
scale these down
and just put them in this metal part
so that's, that's okay for that
so that's good for now
close the editor
and then unwrap
if you right-click collapsed then that will apply
your uv map to your edit poly object
so you can see here my unwrap is still on there, my uv cordinates
and you can put the unwrap on and collapse it down
as many times as you want
all right so let's add some
thickness to these pieces here, so our plank and our frame are infinitely thin
because they are planes
so let break them up
so we can add a shell modifier to them
I'll select this guy first
and click in editpoly, click detach
as a new object
and then select the plank
click detach
as a new object
so select the plank
and put a shell modifier on it
so, shell
uh...
0.75 for outer looks about right
and...
so the cool thing about shell is it's going to put the texure on both sides
all we really need to worry about is the edges here which we will fix in a
minute
so I'll collapse that down
and it collaspse as an edit mesh so I'm just going to switch it to editpoly
and then we'll select the frame
and we will put a shell on it
as well
shell...
actually I want it to go the other way
because it's getting a little weird right here
so I'm going to put that at zero
then have it go this way
0.75 is too thick, so let's try 0.25
which looks about right
maybe 0.3
uh... yeah 0.3
umm and then you can
either collapse it or select it and convert to edit poly
so that'll apply the shell to the object
so this metal frame, it's so thin
that I actually don't...
the little bit of stretching, it doesn't really bother me that much
if it bothers you, you can go back and fix it but I'm just going to keep it
however I am gonna fix it for the wooden plank
so I'm going to select the wooden plank
that I'm going to put an unwrap on it
and I'm going to open the uv editor
so I'm going to get..
select this side
and that side
and let's put our texture in the background
let's do just a flatten map
so that will flatten out our two sides here
I'm just gonna...
move them up
and put him on this wooden...
wooden texture part
and then do the same thing for these two
that side and that side
we'll do a flat map
it made those huge
uh... shrink those
we'll put those on a wooden part as well
All right so we got rid of the stretching
and then we'll close
and then uh...
collapse
so now we got our basic pieces so let's go ahead and build the bench
so select my plank and I'm gonna move it up
put it on top of the frame
move it out to the edge a litte bit
and then let's try... try four
I've done this before so I think four fits
so you can do three copies right away
and it'll do that
or if you just want to do it one at a time
uh... it's up to you
and then we'll do three for the back so move that up
and then rotate it ninety degrees
one this I did is hit a, it turns on the angle snap
so that'll make it easier for you to rotate it ninety degrees
and move it against
and let's do...
three of these, so we'll do two copies
then we will select all of these with a box and move them down
like that
um...
let's look underneath, turn off my grid with g
select the frame
hold shift
copy him over
then let's put one in the middle
all right
then grab the table, the table... the bench leg
you can see the pivot point is kind of offset from when it was connected to the other things
so I'm just going to go up to hierarchy
affect pivot only, then center to object
so now I can, I'll be a little easier to move the leg around
so I'll put him
I think it looks best if he's back like that
and we'll make a copy
and then make a copy
so one thing I'm going to do really quick
as you can see the textures for all of these are the same
so I'm going to select this guy
rotate him ninety degrees
adn select him and
rotate him ninety degrees in the other direction
that way the textures are all different on each of those pieces
Then now let's
let's set up some variation for the rest of this
so uh...
let's attach it all together
so attach
and attach all these pieces
even the metal frames so it'll make it one solid object
then put an unwrap on it
going to uv editor
so, face
now let's do the planks first turn on the texture in the background
and I'm going to click the little white box or cube that will let me select per element
so I can just select each plank at once
so I'll start..
here, that'll be the bottom one I'll just select the next one
and I'm just going to hold shift and move them straight up
I'm just going to line up each of these with a different wood plank
this, to some people might seem like kind of a waste
having all these different planks
you could probably get away with maybe just two or three different ones and
then just like moving and rotating the
uvs around and stuff, but I like to have
a little bit more variation
but for a simple texture like this you could use the texture over and over again for
other objects, maybe a wooden shelf
or wooden crate, pallet, or whatever
so having that variation
doesn't really bother me
so I'm going to select uh... one of the frames
and just move him over that way
select him and move him over this way
so now you can see...
if I collapse...
let'*** f4, turn off my edges just for a second, so now you can see
these are all different
because I shifted them over
ann now the wooden
planks are all different
so it's looking pretty good so far
one more step
let's make ah...
the little metal part that it connects to, so we'll do
4 length
3, for this plane
and let's open up material, let's put that material on it
and let's unwrap him
unwrap
editor
and let's put our texture in the background
select the face
oops a little to hasty
I don't like, I'm going to use the freeform I don't like how the scale works in 2012 it's really touchy
so I'm just going to use the freeform
and just get it to match up on that texture I had
close
and let's collapsed to
switch it to editpoly
select the top
I'll just extrude this a little bit so extrude
let's do...
0.5
so that'll give a little bit thickness, again if you want to fix the edges you can
but this thing is so small and would be
uh... right against the ground if it were to go in a game so it doens't really bother me
I'm just going to keep it as is
and then...
get it in there, so
that's looking pretty good
let's copy it
once
make two copies
we have to adjust the last one so there we go
we got the little braces
for the bench
and one more thing let's put a ground plane on it
so we'll make a plane
make it 250 by 250
then make it grey
and then right click on move then and let's right click on these it'll put it right at
0,0,0 in the middle
it doens't really fit very well let's select our park bench
and let's edit the picot point it's kind of over there
so go over to the hierarchy tab
affect pivot only
center to object
and let's move the pivot point
so that it's down at the foot
take that off
and I forgot to attach the brackets
so select the park bench
we'll call it "parkbench"
and then uh... attach
the little
braces to it
and once we move the pivot to the right spot we can go to
move, then we'll right click
to set it at 0,0,0
so that'll pull it up to the right spot
turn off the edges and there we go
and that's a nice little park bench it looks pretty good
you can put this in a game engine
very quick, very easy, very efficient and you can use your texture, or even the
pieces from the bench to make a lot of other different objects
so I hope you enjoyed my video and uh...
watch my other ones
