>> Phyllis Frimpong: Hi, my name is Phyllis Frimpong.
I am an Africana studies minor, with a concentration
in history and culture.
One of the things that really drew my attention
to the program was the staff.
You can tell right off the bat that they truly care more about
what is in the textbook, but how you can apply it
to the real life.
And so, taking my very first class with Dr. Onyango
in Introductory to Africana Studies, into being able to go
on a study abroad, has just been a wonderful experience working
with the program.
Within the program, there are several different
concentrations in which you can find what fits best for you.
There's everything from fine arts all the way into gender,
and so there's a whole array of opportunities and how you can
find your niche in Africana studies.
This summer I was granted to opportunity to study abroad
to South Africa with the program.
And we had the wonderful opportunity of finding a
concentration in which you can do research in, and then we
also had the opportunity to teach and also specialize in
different areas within South Africa to teach the children
that were there and volunteer at different orphanages.
So it has just been a wonderful opportunity, working with the
department, and the program has awesome and unique ways
for you to just find what fits for you.
