BOBBY MARKS: As GMs gather their scouts and top lieutenants
to start this trade process, questions
are going to be bounced around the room focused
on the now, and also the future of the team.
Is there a player, or players out there
who can help us solidify a playoff spot?
Is there a team like Detroit or Orlando,
who have gone through a slow rebuild, willing to risk
some future assets just to get into the playoffs?
Is there a team like Brooklyn, looking
to get their business done now, instead of this summer, when
20 teams will have cap space.
The Nets, in dire need of a shooting guard and point guard,
might be able to find that player
on the open market in February.
As we know, the point guard market this summer
is below average.
Don't be surprised if there is a team that
is willing to go in and scoop up a guard in the next few weeks.
Have injuries snakebit a team like the Bulls,
to think that health will cure everything?
If so, can Chicago tread water the next two months,
hoping not to get lapped by the field?
Is risking a first round pick too much just
to get into the playoffs?
The successful franchises, like San Antonio and Oklahoma City,
recognized a long term plan, not the instant gratification.
Does moving back in the playoff race
prove beneficial for the long term health of a team?
Look at down south in Atlanta.
The Hawks have made the playoffs eight years in a row,
and point guard Jeff Teague is on the open market.
Would a move in Teague help them in the long term,
but also sacrifice short term success?
But the big question still remains,
is Golden State in San Antonio so head and shoulders
above everyone else that trying for a home run
is setting themselves up for failure?
Check back next week, as we dive deeper into teams' needs
as we near the deadline.
