The Advising Centers here put me right on track.
Academic Advising helped take the pressure off of me as a student.
It was very overwhelming, especially since I'm a freshman, and I'm very new to the
college curriculum. So college advising helped me prepare to make the
schedule and it made me feel less overwhelmed with the whole
college experience in general.
The advising, going to Lori Gubliak, who was my advisor freshman year, she told me that I had
these advisors specifically for my major. So I went to them if I needed to find out what DECs to take or what my
requirements were for my major in order to graduate on time. So she was my first resource that brought me to another resource
which was right here in the engineering building.
Academic Advising is very important for the students that I meet in the College of Engineering because the
programs that these students are looking to complete are very very rigorous and sequential So academic advising
plays an important role in establishing a relationship with these students so that they
can connect with our office, their major program undergraduate program directors,
and get the information that they need to be successful in completing their degree requirements.
Well we also work hard to connect our students to certain kinds of opportunities on campus. The offices we
primarily work with are URECA, which is our Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Office, because we want to connect our
students to research opportunities. We work with the Dean of Students Office closely, and many of
our Scholars 101 First Year Seminar instructors are from the Dean of Students Office, and this is because we want to try to connect
our students to leadership opportunities. We've had a close connection with international academic programs
and services because we really encourage our students to do study abroad or international exchange. And finally
we have a close working relationship over many years with our Career Center because we want our students to seek out
internships and also to consider their career pathways after they graduate from Stony Brook.
It's important for us to connect students to important resources on campus, such as, if you have a major
declared or a major of interest, you need to visit those departments. It's important for students to start building relationships with
their major departments and to go to them for advising purposes. When it comes to choosing their classes
for their major, their department's the expert. It's important for them to understand the graduation
requirements. So...the DEC requirements, what are DECs?, how long do they have to fulfill them? We can help explain all
of these things. It's important for students to understand the policies such as the add/drop swap deadline.
If the students are having difficulties in their classes within the first two weeks, it's important for them to know that they can add
a class, drop a class, swap into a different section, if they're having a difficult time. In high school,
students aren't allowed to do that. So in their first semester of their freshman year, it's important for them to know that they are allowed to do
that. It's important for them to understand the pass/no credit option and that it exists as well as when
the withdrawal deadline is, when they're allowed to withdraw from classes. Again, they're not allowed to do these things in
high school, so it's our job to make sure that they know that they can do these things as well as when the deadlines are.
Success for me is a journey, for me,
because understand that just because I have one successful interaction with my student that
day, tomorrow might me something different. And to know that a student has the
faith and trust within me as a counselor, to know that I will be, I'll do my best to give them the
best advice possible as well as their colleague or their friend.
I love academic advising and it's very important to the student athlete success here, which is the cohort of students that
I get to work with on a daily basis. So I love just seeing their progress from high school all the way till graduation
and working with them every single day. It's very important that they have academic advisors
just because they have certain NCAA eligibility rules and regulations that they have to achieve every
semester, throughout the entire year to make sure they're eligible to compete in their sports. So that's kind of my job is to make sure
those benchmarks are being hit and they're in the appropriate classes while also monitoring their success towards
graduation and the university requirements and major requirements.
I am very responsible for my college career but I do know that there are
resources to help me figure out what I need to do in order to maximize my whole college
experience. So that's why academic advising is extremely important, because they're your biggest resource
to help you guide through picking the classes you need and making sure that your education is
maximized to the full potential.
