today I want to talk about something
which is rather nebulous
extremely important to playing jazz
let's talk about playing the groove
I know we know it when we hear it
but how come some players play with a better groove than others
a group that we like better
and how do we create that groove
for ourselves
also just to mention there are many grooves.
there's Latin grooves blues grooves
there's a Chick Corea groove there's all sorts of grooves
so we wanna learn how to analyzed the groove
and then how to recreate it. let's take a look at this
and incidently I like to use boogie woogie
as the simple way you get my students to play
the groove
so you could use boogie woogie all
as I'm going to use it or you could if you want to you can
play Latin groove for instance you can still use the same principle
okay let's get started
there are a number of different boogie boogie boogie grooves
the 1 I'm going to be using today is a rolling
three
kinda far barber to double to go about to go
and incidentally one of the best ways to set up a groove in your mind
is to create a language for the groove
okay ok with a metronome on
and the first thing I want to do
come up with a language approximation
for a dialect if you will
of the groove that I want to play I found it easier
just say it them to play it so let's say
12 to choppered
the second thing I want to do
is understand that I'm playing against the metronome
the groove is a powerful feeling
in order to have that feeling you cannot play on top with the groove for instance
if I go
it doesn't have a good groove feel in order to play with a good
groove feel I have to come in a head of the groove
go to some coming in
just ahead and was like a mini head I try to be very consistent about where
for now I'm gonna play we grew owning
you too you to 22
on
on
her
you gonna play on
her
her
on
on
a couple things to remember now
the groove is not about how loud you play
or how much you pound against the piano
the groove is more about the time
and it's great to play with a metronome so that you can play
against the metronome do this over and over and over
different grooves
and have fun with the language enjoy yourself
