Welcome, Alexander Rybak!
Thank you very much!
Here we looked back to NRK’s Kjempesjansen, your big breakthrough
It was strange to see it again
Oh, really?
Yeah. You never get rid of “Oh, that’s how I look and how I sound” feeling
But I still want to be on TV.
But you have done many things. You’ve been here before
And that was the summer when you were walking around and greeted people
Yes, and that really helped. Thank you a lot for that!
What was happening?
Nobody recognized me the first time I did it in Valdres.
They didn’t know who I was and what I had in my violin case.
But this time being on TV helped me a lot. The best thing I think was that
the local newspapers wrote about it, and as everybody reads them, so…
I’ve never felt so much like a local celebrity before.
Cars beeped at me and people asked me to wait, because they wanted to join me
I felt like Forrest Gump.
So you were accepted at once
Yeah, and it was much easier to visit other people
How was it to sleep in other people’s houses?
Lot of sleep. But I didn’t have to knock on the door now, because I got sms all the time
“come and live with us when you’re nearby” and so on, and that was very kind of them
There were also many people who wanted to pick me up with their cars
But I didn’t want to, I wanted to walk all the way
and that’s when I started to make the melody
Yes, you’re going to sing and play the song Fairytale at the Melodi Grand Prix
Yeah
How did you come up with the idea of the song?
I was walking around for about two weeks, and after 5-6 days I was humming
the same song all the time and it got stuck in my brain
without me knowing what it really was.
And then one day I realized that it was my own song
And I decided to work more with the text And it is, of course, a love song
Did you have any local people in mind when you wrote this song?
No
Really?
Yeah.
But it helped me that I met many people
Why is the name of the song FAIRYTALE?
Because it’s something Norwegian. I was surrounded by Norwegian nature
And that was the name that fitted the most to the song
I was humming something like hmmmmm Fairytale, this is how it happened
You’re pointed out by the newspapers and bookmakers to be the big favourite
to win the Norwegian final, but is this against your purpose?
Thank you, that’s exactly what I think And it’s just guessing
If I do it well, I’m afraid the people won’t vote even though they like the song
because they know everybody else does
But at the same time VG gives me great notifications and that’s great for songwriters
Because when our work is done, they support us.
You can’t sing FAIRYTALE for us today, but you’re going to play another song for us
Good luck in the final!
Song from a secret garden
What is the reason you want to play with Alexander?
Actually, it’s so bad. It’s my job
He hasn’t got any other choice
I haven’t had any choice as he studies at Barrat Due Institute of Music
You see he’s trying to become a musician So I get paid to play with Alexander
So that’s the reason
We heard that FAIRYTALE became a song after he went walking in Sunnmöre
How do you think it will be received by the people?
I’m sure they’re going to love the song I was one of the first in Norway
who’s has heard it on Alexander’s I-pod
An early version
An early version where he sings with the voice he has and it sounds great
Not only a good Eurovision song but also a good song
It was good that you mentioned I-pod because I usually ask people that come here
the question “What’s your favourite song on your I-pod today”?
Today? Not today. My I-pod has been broken for the last two weeks
Is this a commercial for I-pod? No?
No!
I have listened a lot to my song. Or it has been “Moon Blue” by Stevie Wonder
Why?
I don’t know it just brings out feelings. Sometimes I feel cold and empty
because I haven’t been in love for a long time and then pull out
those feelings with that song
I don’t know it just brings out feelings. An important thing for people
now or then when they want to feel happy, for example,
Is so simple as to get out a song that makes you feel happy
even if you have been sad before.
What does it take to make Alexander Rybak fall in love?
A song of Stevie Wonder. Maybe.
What a girl should be like? What does it take?
Wasn’t there anyone in Sunnmöre who inspired you?
Yes, but this song is about an earlier love. So it’s good that I’m single now
because then I’m more credible on the stage. It’s stupid to sing about someone
you miss when you have another one.
And you, what tune did you listen to last on your I-pod?
I don’t think it’s something many people are looking for to listen
because it was a second part invention of Bach Played by Glenn Gould
Invention?
Invention is the opposite of outvention I don’t know any more
Is it true that you mostly get inspiration from other types of music
than from that you are playing or is it from the same type of music?
Normally we don’t play what we have played now.
At school we play something more stylistically pure
Is it like you need to listen to Stevie Wonder and maybe a little soul and funk?
Me, for example, I listen to jazz a lot. I have discovered a very good jazz pianist Brad Mel
He’s nice to have him on the I-pod
We are going to listen to him
That was it. We wish you both good luck in the future.
In Melodi Grand Prix.
And in Melodi Grand Prix as well
