April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day
I invite Mustafa Kemal Pasha to the podium.
I would like you to know that
I will work with all my presence to gain the national sovereignty we all want.
For this, I promise to work together with my people.
Mustafa Kemal started to Independence War before delivering this speech.
On May 19, 1919, Mustafa Kemal went to Samsun to invite the citizens
to resist the unfair occupation.
After the Erzurum and Sivas Congresses
scatter forces merged under one roof
and the Independece War against the emeny began.
For the management of the war and liberation, a committee was selected to represent.
Mustafa Kemal became the head of the committee.
The committee came to Ankara and began to continue their studies here.
Ankara was not under occupation,
close to the western front
had a railway
and was a proper position as a center of work.
Atatürk believe that for a the national struggle to continue, a National Assembly was necessary.
He announced the opening of the Grand National Assembly on March 19, 1920.
A new election began in Anatolia.
The representatives from the old assembly were invited too.
86 representative came to Ankara from Istanbul.
On April 10, 1920, most of the representatives gathered in Ankara.
A podium was made for this hall, where the represenattives were going to gather.
A black cloth was hung on the podium. It was going to stay there until the victory.
There were no rows to sit on. The rows were brought from a school nearby.
A gas lamp, taken from a shop, was hung.
A stove was set in the middle of the hall.
On April 23, 1920, after the friday prayer in Hacı Badem Mosque, everyone went to the parliment.
After the prayers were made, representatives entered the parliment.
The Grand National Assembly was opened after a ceremony like this.
The representatives took an oath after reading the reports.
Only 115 representatives out of 338 could attend the first meeting.
The oldest representative Şerif Bay became the temporary chairman.
Şerif Bey made a speech.
After him, Mustafa Kemal gave information about the country's situation.
Mustafa Kemal was chosen to be the chairman of the Grat National Assembly.
He also became the head of the new government
named Turkey Grand National Assembly Government.
