A commonly asked question that we get is "If you only adjust the neck, what if I have low
back pain, or sciatic pain, pain running into my leg. How is NUCCA Chiropractic going to
fix that?" That is a really good question. It's actually the same question I had when
I first started learning about the NUCCA Chiropractic technique. How can adjusting the neck fix
the low back? The way the NUCCA Chiropractor looks at the
spine, instead of 24 individual blocks that are stacked on top of each other, we look
at the spine as one single dynamic unit. Kind of like a slinky, where you can't move one
part without affecting another part. The weakest part of this whole system in the body is right
up at the very top. We have this big head that sits upon this tiny little neck. When
we have bumps, bruises, accidents and injuries it rattles your head around. Your neck doesn't
swell like a finger can. There are a lot of muscles and ligaments that hold the head down
onto the neck. The muscles spasm to protect the area, and when they spasm, it knocks your
head out of balance. Just like a slinky, if you were to stretch
it, twist the top, you would cause a kink down at the bottom. That kink can happen in
the low back, it can happen in the mid back, it can happen in the neck. It can happen in
multiple spots, wherever the weak spot is. If your back is in the kinked position, we
can stretch it, we can exercise it, sometimes we can even try to push it back into place.
Like a slinky, it just kind of moves around, until we untwist and get the balance back
in the spine. Once that balance is put back in the spine,
then the stretching and the exercising can help hold that in place. But the key is returning
that balance first. That's how adjusting the top of the neck can affect the entire spine.
