The Galapagos are a group of volcanic islands located on the equator roughly 1000 km (600 miles) west
of the South American coast. Like many oceanic islands, such as Hawaii, the Azores, and Reunion,
the Galapagos are thought to be the product of a mantle plume. Mantle plumes are columns
of hot rock, roughly 100 km in diameter, that rise from deep within the Earth.
The lithosphere is broken up into about 2 dozen or so plates, which move with respect
to one and other. This plate motion, together with the flow of the underlying asthenosphere,
is part of a system of convection that is the principal way in which the Earth looses
heat. Abundant fearless wildlife, visitors can get
up close and personal to some of the world's rarest animals
There are two seasons: December to May is warm and wet and June to December is cool
and dry Annual rainfall in the lower regions is 2-4in
(60-100mm) and the air temperature varies between 69°-84°F/21°-29°C
The islands' climate is determined by ocean currents
• yellowstone • World's First National Park
• 3,472 square miles or 8,987 square km • Approximately 5% of park is covered by
water; 15% is grassland; and 80% is forest • Precipitation ranges from 10 inches (26
cm) at the north boundary to 80 inches (205 cm) in the southwest corner
• An active volcano • Approximately 1,000-3,000 earthquakes
annually • Approximately 10,000 thermal features
• More than 300 geysers • One of the world's largest calderas, measuring
45 by 30 miles (72 by 48 km) • Thousands of petrified trees in northern
Yellowstone • Approximately 290 waterfalls, 15 ft. or
higher, flowing year-round • Atmospheric concentrations of mercury
• Thermal basins
The Mojave Desert is located in the southwestern United States and is composed of Death Valley,
Pahrump Valley, Amargosa Valley, the Las Vegas Valley and some of the surrounding areas.
In a single day in the Mojave, the climate (weather patterns for a particular region
or habitat) is often very extreme, reaching hot temperatures of 50°C (120°F) and even
hotter in the summer and often much cooler when the sun goes down (outside of the city
- where there is no concrete or asphalt to hold the heat). In the winter, the temperature
often stays below freezing at night but warms up to a comparatively comfortable temperature
in the day. The Mojave averages less than 12cm (5 inches)
of precipitation (rain and snow) a year! Atmosphere very dry
Shifen Shifen Waterfall is one of the most famous in Taiwan. It is not very tall (20m)
but it is wide (40m) and powerful. It forms a horseshoe and has been nicknamed the Little
Niagara even though it is much smaller. The hike: It is a 15 minute walk east to the waterfall
with plenty of signs This great waterfall looks like a blanket
of white silk falling into a great wide pond. Due to the hydrosphere around the waterfall,
you may have high probability to see a beautiful rainbow in a sunny day.
