If you loved Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH or
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase or
both … then this week’s Pick is one you should
start reading ASAP … after you watch the rest of this review, that is.
Emmy Addison kind of has a lot of problems. For one thing, none of the kids in her class
seem to know she even exists. For another, her nanny is always making her eat disgusting
things like tofu muffins and drink odd potions that make Emmy feel strange.
And then there’s the talking rat. All right, as you’ve probably already guessed,
Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat is a hodgepodge of everything from rodents with
super powers, a la Mrs. Frisby, scheming guardians who have plans to make off with the family
fortune, a la The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, magic potions (Alice and Wonderland), and
even an eccentric professor with narcolepsy, a la The Mysterious Benedict Society.
But in spite of its allusions to other classic children’s tales, Emmy and the Incredible
Shrinking Rat is an incredible story all on its own. It’s got humor, suspense, friendship
… and a concoction to thwart dishonesty with uproarious side effects.
OK, now you can go. One fantastic story awaits you.
