Hey, Y'all! Long time, no see!
We wanted to give you another update about the walk in May!
We're excited! The deadline to register if you want to walk for
2 weeks or 30 days is February 15th (tomorrow!).
Please consider joining! And if you want to know more, contact us
and we'll answer any questions you might have. If you
are thinking of walking for a shorter period (1 week or less)
you have until mid-April to sign up, so don't worry,
you still have time to decide!
We want to share with you about our "themes" during the walk.
We'll be exploring specific themes each week during the month of May.
During the first week, we'll be discussing the old frame of how
D-E-A-F folks have historically been viewed & framed. We will also
discuss how the Deafhood journey helps us get out of that old frame.
During the second week we will explore engaged pedagogy, and will
look at deconstructing Deaf Education in terms of exploring the
marriage of Education & Medicine, as well as
how that has impacted Deaf children.
During the third week we will explore intersections and
social justice in our Deaf community.
During the final week we will explore potential new
frameworks that we can use to represent our community.
If you are interested in facilitating discussions, or presenting,
please contact us. We would love to have different experts come in!
We are also interested in having folks send it mini-curriculums,
lesson plans that can be used in schools during the month of May.
We want to share resources for ideas on how to teach, and
specifically how to teach certain topics.
For instance, if we were to touch on "Deafhood" for one day,
what would you recommend teachers cover?
Or, if we're discussing intersections, what are some activities
that teachers can use in the classroom to touch on this concept?
Or maybe we're taking a look at the old framework- what ideas do you have
for encouraging hearing people to better understand how the system
creates oppression of Deaf folks?
If you develop mini-lessons and are willing to share, we will post
it on our website and will credit you for your work.
We already have one offer and are looking forward to the vlog-
which has a lot of relevance to current discourse on language.
Anyway, those are just our recent updates. Very much looking forward
to seeing this event happen in May!! We can't wait! Feels like
we can already smell summer, can imagine the ocean by our side.
We are even looking forward to blisters and exhaustion! Hope you
decide to join us in May 2013!!!!!
