We will now cross live to Dr Pita Sharples,
the Minister of Maori Affairs and Co-Leader of the Maori Party.
How is the Maori Party going in preparations
for the impending Te Tai Tokerau by-election?
There is so much to do, but it is fine because the Maori Party office
will rise again in Te Tai Tokerau.
Our offices there have been strengthened.
We visited towns throughout the region to spread our message.
Solomon Tipene - many of us don't know who he is.
What are his skills?
He is a man who has worked tirelessly for his people -
in councils, and in other areas. This man is a leader.
He is very soft-spoken and humble.
We will teach him the policies that the Maori Party uphold
so that he will be able to speak on these topics.
Do you think he will win?
- Yes, he will win.
Really?
- Yes, truly. Just wait for that day.
Yes, wait and see.
What was the point of attending the Destiny's Church congregation?
I see a few of you went.
They invited us to go and discuss what we are doing in Parliament,
but when we arrived, there was no talk of politics.
The focus was on what Destiny Church has to offer.
So that was our visit, but I did speak on the topic given by them
- the Maori Party policies.
There are many Maori
who have converted to Destiny Church for salvation.
Do you support what they are doing for Maori?
The faith has many good attributes.
They work hard within homes and communities for the less fortunate.
They have opened a school,
where they can teach their children their teachings.
They have done a lot for the people, and I commend them.
Let's talk about the Queen's Birthday Honours.
Katerina Mataira was awarded the highest of NZ honours
- a knighthood. Your thoughts?
Katerina is an inspiration.
She has spent year exerted herself
in writing plays and books, songs and so much more.
She supported us in our endeavours for the Kura Kaupapa movement
and all those things.
It was her who laid the foundation for Te Ataarangi,
those were her efforts.
So, I am very happy she has received this honour.
Dr Pita Sharples, thank you for your time today.
