Gisellet Turino Arias would never have imagined that her life would take such a drastic turn.
She tells her story of Cuba human rights abuses from her home in the municipality south of Guantanamo.
Every day, Gisellet dedicated herself to her babies, while her husband, Jeden
Fuente Arias, worked to support his family as an independent worker on the
streets of his native city. One day her husband was detained.
Well, my husband's father told him when he came home. He was working as a self-employed
worker. When he came home, he told him he had to go to the police station because they were looking
for him. He walked to the police. They arrested him. They took him by force. They put him inside
the little machine. Arriving at the police station, they cuffed him, without telling anyone anything;
no notice, no conversation. They put him in the little machine and took him directly to the D.T.I.
Since April 22, he has been detained in the Police unit known as Park 24 in the capital
city of the province. Jeden is a young man, who, like many Cubans, had a difficult time finding work.
He went around everywhere to find an honest way to bring bread home to his children.
This has been very painful for me; since I have a six month old baby and an
eight year old girl. We are alone and abandoned. He was the support of this family.
He is everything in our lives. Gisellet has also suffered human rights abuses in Cuba.
They made my life impossible, after they imposed the sanction. They came to my
work to punish me. In the same department of the pharmacy,
They would threaten me. They would say you are going to jail at any moment. We
are going to throw you in there. In his neighborhood, neighbors comment on
the events: Jeden del Fuente Aria someone that everyone in Caimanera loves and appreciates
because he is a solid boy, understand? He has a good relationship with the town. His unjust
detainment has hurt practically everyone here in the city. He was caught up in that cause. I know he is a human
rights activist, understand?
The detention resulted from his aspirations and political actions. He was in the town of Caimanera,
in a public place, and he expressed that he was against the Castro government, since
he had been harassed various times by the inspectors and the State security. Gissellet addresses
the international community and human rights international organizations about her husband and
I would like to send a message to all the international communities. Whoever wants to
can help me with my husband's case, since he was unjustly jailed for defending his rights,
his family's rights and human rights issues in Cuba.
And I want to make one thing clear. I want to be very clear. The Cuban government
is responsible for anything that happens to my husband in jail.
