David: Let's go to voicemails and emails. Our voicemail line, we're reactivating it,
219-2DAVIDP. Here's one voicemail I received from an individual about Barack Obama possibly
throwing in the towel behind the scenes on the public option, or making a deal with lobbyists.
Let's take a listen.
Caller: Hey, Dave. I was just listening to your show from the other day about health
care and asking whether Obama had...
David: By the way, clearly a Boston guy here.
Caller: ... negotiated away the public option before he even started. And I've heard that
for a long time at this point, and it absolutely makes sense. I mean, just think about the
maddening way that he would go on television and just dissect and slice the stupid health
care thing and whether it was going to be single-payer or a public option or no public
option, you know, just dissecting the thing into a million pieces...
David: All right. I have to say, just because Barack Obama was saying a number of different
things and using nuance, that doesn't mean... that's certainly not proof that he didn't
actually want the public option. It certainly indicates maybe some lack of consistency on
the message, but it's not necessarily proof or even an indicator of anything. But I do
also agree with the general idea that Barack Obama should not have started from... the
negotiation from the point where he wanted to end. That's for sure. I think we could
all agree on that, Louis, all of us who would favor public option or more.
Louis: Agreed.
David: Emails. Republicans making tiny cuts to stuff that makes no real impact on the
budget: "Hey, let Louis know that the Republicans actually depend on low voter turnout, it's
what gets them elected. It's the reason behind their push for stricter voter regulations
and registrations." Louis knows that, doesn't he?
Louis: I'm aware of this. But remember, we live in Massachusetts.
David: Right. "They're not really interested in fixing the budget, they're trying to use
this to advance their social agenda." Yeah, that's absolutely clear.
Barack Obama and the public option: "Obama has caved on almost everything, to the point
where it's no longer because he's weak but because it's on purpose. In other words, money
under the table galore." Hey, that is always my suspicion with politicians on the left
and right. No question about it.
Transocean and BP getting safety awards even through the Deepwater Horizon oil spill: "So
how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln? Aside from, you know... Same kind of situation here, I
think." And, "This story made my brain explode." It's common that our audience has that problem,
severe head trauma after listening to the show, but it's usually not a result of just
a story like that, it's usually the result of Louis saying something bizarre, right?
That's more... more accustomed to that.
Louis: I'm not sure, actually. I haven't heard much feedback on that.
David: And emails on Louis not voting: "Why vote when both sides suck? Because one side
sucks less than the other. If you want to get all self-righteous about how important
your one vote is, then you're as much to blame for the problems we face as the people who
vote for the party that sucks even more." And we all know which one that is. "Even if
you despise the Democratic Party for how spineless and corrupted by money it is," I've alluded
to that, "this budget issue should tell you that at least they stand for the people's
interest in spades more than the Republicons. So think of your vote as a push in a direction,
not your stamped approval of what the politician stands for." Wow, a complete condemnation
of Louis not voting. I have to say, I really agree with this.
Louis: Wow. Harsh.
David: We'll be back on Thursday with a new show.
