Welcome to the Donald R. Tapia School of Business at Saint Leo University. We are glad that
you can join our faculty in adapting our modern classroom technology to actively engage students
in your lessons. We'd like to give you a quick orientation to teaching in our enhanced
classrooms, so join me as we explore the possibilities for teaching and learning here in the Donald
R. Tapia School of Business.
Our classrooms are equipped with Crestron integrated control systems, that allow you
to quickly control all of the devices and lighting in the room. Devices like the document
camera, and the Smart Displays. Use the lighting control panel near the door to operate the
lights. If you need to raise or lower the window blinds, there is a separate toggle
switch located on the wall near the telephone. Each room is equipped with a telephone, and
near the telephone, you will find a green card with helpful contact numbers. You'll
find the first number for Classroom Technology Help particularly useful.
One of the first things that you should do before class starts, is perform a sort of
Room Reset. You'll find that the digital parts of your lesson will go much more smoothly
if you Reset prior to class. It's a good routine, and only takes 2 minutes. First,
go to the podium, and check if the monitor is powered on by looking for a light on the
power button in the lower right hand corner of the monitor. You may have to switch it
on if it is not lit. If you move the mouse and the screen is still blank, open the closet
door, and press the power button on the PC on the right hand side. It will light up,
indicating that it is powered on. If the PC is already logged in and you can see the Smart
Meeting Pro toolbar on the left side of the screen, you should click the Reset Room button.
Click OK to confirm, and it may ask you if you wish to save any open files -- just click
No to discard them. The PC will now automatically Reset itself by closing Smart Meeting Pro,
and logging out of Windows. While the PC resets, walk over to the Crestron touch panel on the
wall. To reset the Crestron touch panel, press the Power button on the left, then press the
green On button on the screen, and now press the orange PC button. By now, the PC will
have reset itself, and you can login to Windows. Pull out the keyboard drawer, and look for
a green card with the username and password. Always use this same username and password
when logging into the classroom PC. You will know that the PC and Smart Meeting Pro software
is ready to go whenever you see the Smart Meeting Pro toolbar on the left side of your
screen. By default, it automatically starts in Whiteboard mode. You can move between Whiteboard
mode and Desktop mode using the toolbar buttons in the upper left corner of the screen.
To use the Smart Displays as a whiteboard, first make sure that you are in Whiteboard
mode with the toolbar button in the upper left corner of your screen. Now, anyone can
walk up to any of the Smart Displays, pick up the magnetic Smart pen, and begin writing
on the whiteboard. If the pen doesn't work, or doesn't line up correctly with your writing,
you should use the Orient button below the screen. It looks like a set of crosshairs.
Press it to begin Orientation. Now, on the screen, touch each of red crosshair icons
as they appear at different locations on the screen. When using the magnetic pen, you can
change colors using the buttons below the display. There is also a magnetic eraser located
below the display. Alternatively, you can use your hands to draw on the display. To
use your hands to draw, choose the Pen tool from the toolbar buttons on the left, then
use your finger to write. You'll find that keeping your finger perpendicular to the display
will increase accuracy. Be careful not to rest your palm, or any other part of your
body, on the display. To quickly erase, make a fist, and use the end of your fist as an
eraser. You can have two students at once writing on a Smart Display, using either their
hands or the magnetic pen.
If you would like to use your own files, such as Powerpoint slideshows, Word or PDF documents,
Excel spreadsheets, and websites, you should prepare them prior to class. We recommend
bringing in files on USB flash drives. Before class, insert your USB flash drive into one
of the four USB ports located directly on the PC inside the closet. On PC, on the toolbar
on the left, click the Desktop mode button in the top left corner, and open your files
as you normally would. On the Smart Display, you will notice a small floating toolbar near
the top of each file window. It will indicate either Smart Ink or Microsoft Ink, depending
upon which program you are using. Whenever you write on the display while you are in
Desktop mode, the Smart Ink, which is controlled by the small floating Smart Ink toolbar at
the top of the file window, will follow the file. So if write on top of this PDF document,
then switch to Internet Explorer to view a video and write over top of my Internet Explorer
window, and then switch back to my PDF document, my writing will reappear. To clear my writing,
I will click on the Smart Ink floating toolbar at the top of the window, and clear ink. If
you are using a Microsoft application, such as this Word document, you will notice that
the floating toolbar at the top is now called Microsoft Ink. This tells me that I am using
Microsoft's built-in tools, and anything that I write inside my Microsoft document
will not only stay with the file window when I switch applications, but will also be inserted
into the document itself as a drawing object. So if I write on the first page of this Word
document, my writing is inserted into the first page. If I now scroll down to the second
page, the writing will move up, since it is now attached to the first page. If I press
the Save button now, my writing will be saved in the document on my USB flash drive. Now
I'm going to open my Powerpoint slideshow, and begin the slideshow. When you are in slideshow
mode, you'll notice a floating toolbar with slide controls to advance your slides. You
can use the magnetic pen to write over any of your slides. Whenever you end your slideshow,
you will see a box pop up that gives you the option to keep any annotations that you made
during the slideshow, which are then inserted into the slides, or just discard your annotations.
Remember: if you choose to keep your annotations and then press the Save button, they will
be saved into your slideshow file.
If you want to show other devices on the room displays, use the Sources button on the Crestron
touch panel, and then choose the device that you wish to display. To display multiple devices
on different displays, on the Crestron touch panel, press the Advanced button on the right.
You will see a diagram of the room. To send a device to a specific display, first select
the device at the bottom, and then touch the display to which you'd like to send it.
Each display icon will indicate which device it is currently displaying. To change which
device that you can HEAR through the room speakers, use the same procedure. First touch
the device, and then touch the green Listen button in the center. The Listen button also
indicates which device it is currently using. The room volume controls are on the right
hand side. The audio system will remain powered off until you increase the volume to at least
75%, so press the Volume Up button until the level reaches at least 75%, and then adjust
accordingly.
When your class is finished, please follow this routine to return the classroom setup
to normal. Close any open files or applications on the PC. Press the Reset Room button on
the toolbar on the left. Press the OK button to confirm, and you might have to click the
No button if it asks you save any open whiteboard or other files. The PC will now automatically
reset itself by closing Smart Meeting Pro and logging out of Windows. Now, walk to the
Crestron touch panel, and press the Sources button on the left, and press the PC button
on the screen. Lastly, press the Power button, and then press the green Off button on the
screen to power off the displays.
Remember to remove any of your discs or USB devices from the closet. On your way out,
you can turn off the lights at the white control panel near the door. Following this simple,
2-minute end-of-class routine will help your colleagues more quickly prepare for the next
class in the room.
