Hi! My name is Roger.
And I'd like to talk to you about technology-based informal learning.
Technology-based informal learning is cool!
It's hip!
It's the "bee's knees"...
Alice: Can you get to the point, Roger?
Roger: Look at the Nintendo DS [Which I pronounce "D E S" for some reason]
Roger: Young and old alike are exercising their brains.
Roger: It's fun! There's learning!
Alice: Where's the evidence for learning?
Roger: Look at texting, email, blogging, Twitter, Facebook, internet chat and web forums.
Roger: You can be learning social and rhetorical skills without even realizing!
Alice: Learning bullying, LOL and STFU? Hmmm...
Roger: Kids are sharing knowledge. That's got to be good.
Alice: Roger, What evidence is there?
Roger: Look at games on the Playstation, the Wii, the XBox...
Roger: Strategy! Hand-eye coordination! Historical contexts!
Roger: Guitar-playing! Hannah Montana! Kick-boxing! Geography!
Alice: Yes, but how transferable...
Alice: Wait... "Hannah Montana"?
Roger: I like "Disney Sing It". What can I say?
Roger: But look at the peer learning!
Roger: No teachers! No classroom! No dull curriculum!
Roger: Fun! Fun! Fun!
Roger: Mobile devices like the iPhone.
Roger: Learning about photography. About maps...
Alice: About Doodle Jump and fart apps.
Roger: YouTube! iTunes!
Alice: "Charlie bit my finger". Miley Cyrus
Roger: Second Life!
Alice: ***
Roger: People are remixing content and producing fabulous new works of creativity.
Alice: When they're not ripping off composers and writers.
Roger: It's constructivism! Social constructivism! Distributed learning! Situated learning!
Alice: Roger, what's the research evidence of critical reflection?
Roger: Look at the success of Wikipedia.
Roger: And all the self-help websites for patients...
Roger: ... home improvements, car maintenance...
Roger: You name it and there's a website or an app for it.
Alice: And what do we know of the development of meta-cognitive skills through these websites?
Roger: Learning how to learn! Learning through peripheral participation! Tacit knowledge!
Alice: Are you just spouting buzzwords?
Roger: "Informal learning is the way you learn to speak your language..." [which ironically I pronounce "longwich"]
Roger: "... how you learn who you are."
Roger: "It's serendipitous."
Roger: "Choosing what you want to learn rather than jumping through the hoops set by others."
Roger: "Too much schooling kills off a desire to learn."
Alice: You got these slogans from doing a Google search, didn't you?
Roger: You see!
Roger: Proof!
Roger: I've learned informally using technology!
Roger: Well thanks for listening. And remember...
Roger: Technology-based informal learning is cool!
