Welcome to English 2343, Business Communication in the 8-week accelerated format.
My name is Lynnda Brown, and I will be your instructor for this class.
I have been teaching in the education field since 1984, and I’ve been teaching online since 2002.
I love the independence and flexibility that the online environment offers.
In 2008, I received the Blackboard Exemplary Course award for the design of my Freshman Composition I course.
And in 2013, my Business Communications course was recognized by Quality Matters.
I have two children, a son who is in graduate school at Texas A&M University
and a daughter who attends Broken Arrow High School.
I am very active in my church where I teach ladies Bible class among many other things.
I love to travel.
And I spend most of my free time at home working in my garden or reading a good book.
Now on to highlight the key points of this course.
Business Communications is a university parallel course.
This means that the course is comparable to one you would take at OU or OSU.
Even though this course only runs for 8 weeks,
it is equal in rigor to any Business Communications course taken in the state of Oklahoma.
Our objectives focus on effective methods of business communications.
In order to complete the required reading and writing assignments, successful students report
they spend approximately 10-15 hours per week on course work.
Throughout your business life you will be communicating with people.
In this course, communication is defined as sending an intended message and the receiver receiving the intended message.
When a message other than the intended message is received, it is defined as miscommunication.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon the sender to make sure that the intended message is received.
In order to meet the course learning objectives, you will work through four types of assignments.
READ assignments are ungraded assignments designed for knowledge acquisition and comprehension of key concepts.
DISCUSS assignments allow you to explore multiple aspects of concepts as you think about
your own understandings and engage with the understandings of others.
APPLY assignments ask you to demonstrate that you not only know and understand concepts,
but that you can apply those concepts in different business situations.
Knowledge is great, but if you can't adapt and use that knowledge in a variety of business situations,
then you will not be successful in the business world.
TESTS are designed to verify that you do have a basic understanding of key concepts.
You will have assignments due several times a week.
The due dates are for me as well as for you.
Frequent due dates help me manage the grading across my classes so that you can have
feedback on your assignments as quickly as possible.
Frequent due dates help you schedule your time throughout the week so that you don’t end up
with more assignments than you have time for at the end of the week.
Of course, you can always work ahead to accommodate special circumstances in your life.
The schedule of assignments in the Bb course site identifies when each assignment is due.
The schedule is found in the Syllabus and Couse Info area.
Please print a copy to have handy.
Assignments are due by 8:00 a.m. Central time on the date stated in the Schedule of Assignments.
That was a quick overview of the course.
Please read the syllabus and the Start Here information for specific details on course policy.
The next eight weeks will go by very quickly.
But, by the end, you and I will know each other quite well!
