Overview: Outlook Today, the Ribbon
Mail
Calendar
Contacts
Tasks
Notes
Rules
And just a bit about using Outlook
with Exchange.
If you're having trouble with Outlook, there is a better way...
First off, there will be a PDF for you...
so rather than taking notes right now,
you might just focus on watching
this presentation.
A couple of tips for you:
if you see a chevron, an arrow, a triangle... clicking that means you'll get 'More options.'
If you encounter a menu with the elipsis, the ...
that means a dialog box will open.
Outlook Today
Outlook today is a snapshot of your calendar,
tasks, and messages.
You can customize Outlook Today;
if you can't find Outlook Today,
too bad.
Oh, you know I'll show you how to set up Outlook Today...
we just need to get to the Ribbon first.
Ribbon
The Ribbon is how you navigate the different tools that are in Microsoft products.
I've opened up my copy of Outlook,
and 99 times out of one hundred, you'll want to be on the Home tab.
Most of the good stuff is center, left on the home tab; things that are little further right are used less often.
The further to the right you get on the Ribbon,
moving from tab to tab,
the less frequently you will use these tools. So usually, you want to stay on the Home tab.
There's a great way to move through the Ribbon:
and that's by rolling your mouse wheel; so if you just point at the center of the Ribbon and roll the mouse wheel, it will scroll through the individual
tabs; and if you recall: all the good stuff is center left,
it might be very quick to find what you're looking for.
But typically, stay on the Home tab unless you have a need for something else.
We can customize many aspects of the Ribbon, including the shortcut menu which is at the top left of Microsoft Outlook.
This is where you could include Outlook Today.
At the top left is our quick access, or shortcut menu.
Right here is an arrow, remember arrow's mean more options, so if I click this arrow
I can add more commands to this menu.
Rather than Popular Commands I can search for All Commands.
And perhaps scroll down to find
Outlook Today, and I could add it
and choose [OK]. Now, Outlook Today's on my quick access bar, when I click that
I can see what's on my calendar for today, if I have any outstanding tasks, and how much is going on in my inbox.
And I can just click on the Inbox, when I'm ready to proceed.
Don't forget,
More Commands...
Next, we're going to talk about the layout of your screen for just a bit.
We already know we have the Ribbon at the top and a quick access, or shortcut toolbar, to the very top left.
Bottom left is where you have icons to choose from mail, to the calendar, contacts, etc.
The bottom right is where you can zoom in or zoom out; this layout can be changed on the View menu (tab).
On the View menu (tab), you can choose where the navigation pane is, where the reading pane is,
you can also choose a compact view, if you like.
Again, on the View tab:
you can place the navigation pane, you can control the reading pane...
you can also change your views; remember, arrows mean 'more options.'
Let's talk specifically about the mail tool for a moment.
