I need to get more life out of my car. Do you know some cheap ways to add horsepower
to a car?
Short of rebuilding the engine? Replace the air filters and oil filters.
How does that help?
When the air filters are clogged, the car has trouble getting enough air in to burn
fuel efficiently. If the oil filters are clogged, gunk circulates in the engine, slowing it
down.
That makes sense. Would putting premium gas in my car help?
Premium gas only matters if you have a premium car. Your car is not a Ferrari, so it doesn't
need premium gas.
Given how much my car smokes, it does.
You may simply need to change the car oil. Or you may need to improve the car's exhaust.
I've heard about replacing the car's cylinders and cams.
Changing the cylinders and cams to increase the number of valves per cylinder improves
air flow through the engine. Everything else being equal, this improves performance.
Do I need an intercooler?
To make your car look cooler, or run cooler? Rarely, unless you are driving a race car.
I'd like to get more get up and go.
If that's a problem, have throttle or car computer looked at. The lack of power may
simply be because the car isn't shifting soon enough.
I should increase the car's compression ratio.
Do you even remember what a ratio means? Increasing compression increases the power up to a point,
until the fuel won't ignite any faster or powerfully.
Replacing the engine with lighter weight components improves its performance.
If you weren't lugging around those extra pounds, you'd get better performance.
I get along just fine.
Not you, your car, though you could stand to lose 20 pounds. I meant that emptying out
the trunk of your car and cleaning it up would improve its gas mileage.
Or I could just change out the gas cap.
What's that?
Buy a new car.
You asked for cheap, not easy.
