The UNLV students have reason to celebrate tonight, they graduated.
This is big isn't it, this evening they donned their taps and gowns
and receive those hard-earned diplomas. Fox 5's Elizabeth Watts is at the Thomas and Mack
tonight with the story.
Olivia, John, certainly an exciting night out here at the Thomas and Mack Center these
graduates joined other UNLV alums including food network personality Guy Fieri
who is actually honored at the ceremony tonight.
While the future is still uncertain for some of these graduates, they say it's worth it.
A sea of red and black fills the Thomas and Mack Center for fall graduation.
I'm really happy to finally put some closure on
all the hard work I did over the past like six years. Amazing to actually get to stand
with all of these great people
that I've gone to school with. Students anxious to put the cap on their schooling
thankful for support of their family
and proud they finally made it through. A lot of sleepless nights, being up
all night doing homework, going to work, and I feel
so proud of myself. Some already have jobs they hope to move up in
others getting their first offers. Every resume I put in so far they
call me back. I've been really lucky. But for the rest of them it may be
a tough road with college grads facing 9.5%
unemployment. It's pretty concerning in this day and age especially in the
economy situation that we're in right now. Linda Meryl is getting her bachelors
in time for her 65th birthday.
She put it off for family and work but now she can say she did it.
It's a big commitment
but I decided that's what I want to do and hopefully it will lead to some
better doors opening for me. UNLV alum Guy Fieri was given an Honorary
Doctorate of Laws Degree. He says no matter where they go from here
they're time at UNLV will pay off. My time at UNLV
prepared me for this level of success. Students agree if they can accomplish this
they can do anything.
If you really want something, you just work towards it
and eventually you'll get it.
In all more than 3,000 students graduated today the youngest was
18 years old the oldest 75 and they all come from 59
countries so we want to say congratulations to all those new
graduates out there.
Reporting live tonight Elizabeth Watts Fox 5 News local Las Vegas. What an
exciting day congratulations to all of the graduates who earned those degrees every
little, every last test, every last paper, Elizabeth thank you.
At today's ceremony former Governor Bob Miller received the distinguished Nevadan Award
for his commitment
to higher education.
