Video message: Nalini MALANI for Arts and Culture Prize
My name is Nalini Malani. I'm an experimental visual artist born in Karachi just before
Pakistan became a separate state from India. My family was driven out and as a refugee,
I grew up in a different Indian culture. In which neither language, food, religion, nor
tradition was familiar. Being an artist in the international city of Bombay, times of
political and social change of all can be the desired to address a wider audience with
floating digital images, way beyond the painted frame. As a woman, I had to take up this challenge,
as like everywhere in the world, when orthodox changes take command, the first to suffer
are the women. To receive the Art and Culture Fukuoka Prize means a great deal to me. Fukuoka
acknowledges with respect the importance of the diversity of cultures. It is my opinion,
and this is reflected in my art, that with this openness, we might come to a more progressive
society.
