Welcome to an online weather briefing brought to you by the National Weather Service in
Las Vegas, NV. In this briefing, we will provide some insight into the expected impacts and
some potential impacts from a storm moving across the western U.S. Sunday and into the
first part of next week. The computer forecast models have come into
better agreement and there is an increased confidence in the track of the incoming Pacific
storm. The forecast storm track will likely lead to strong winds area wideůbeginning
in the Sierra Sunday afternoon and spreading across the rest of southeast Californiaůsouthern
Nevada and northwest Arizona by late Sunday night or early Monday. In addition to strong
windsůsome showers will develop Sunday night and Monday north and east of Las Vegas. The
best chance of showers will be across Lincoln County on Monday.
The primary impacts from the storm system will be related to the strong winds gusts
and include:
Blowing dust and sand which could reduce visibility Strong crosswinds could make driving difficult
Winds will begin to increase initially in the eastern Sierra and Owens Valley Sunday
afternoon, into western San Bernardino County Sunday evening and across the rest of the
area later Sunday night or early Monday. Wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph will be common across
the entire area Sunday night through Monday evening. However, there is potential for gusts
over 60 mph, especially across southeast California and southern Nevada. A high wind watch has
been issued for our entire forecast area. Some of the forecast guidance is indicating
a very strong downslope wind event, particularly between 6,000 and 10,000 feet in the eastern
Sierra late Sunday through Sunday night with wind gusts around 80 mph. Although, the probability
of such an event is low, its occurrence will have the potential to produce damaging winds.
The highest confidence is with regard to the breezy to windy conditions across the forecast
area and the cooler temperatures. Temperatures will be around 10 degrees below
normal on Monday Moderate confidence exists for showers in
Lincoln County and northern Mohave County as well as for the occurrence of downslope
winds in the eastern Sierra. Low confidence exists for shower coverage
elsewhere across Clark, the remainder of Mohave County and the northern portions of the eastern
Sierra. Low confidence also exists with the strength
of the downslope wind event in the eastern Sierra and whether or not the downslope winds
will make it into the Owens Valley. Winds gusts 35-50 mph area wide Sunday night
through Monday evening. Low probability for very strong downslope wind event in the lee
of Sierra on late Sunday through Sunday night.
Wind gusts may produce blowing dust and sand and strong crosswinds on area roads
The best opportunity for showers on Monday will be north and east of the Las Vegas Valley
with rain amounts expected to be no greater than a tenth to two tenths of an inch.
