cynthia let me ask you as a universal problem does it include the united
states oh yes and in fact it includes the united states in several ways I mean one
of the primary ways is the u_s_ military around its overseas bases not every base
it really depends on the local
governments own concerns
but around most u_s_ bases overseas
there is a prostitution industry and the prostitution industry
commercial executives if you want to call them that the people who make the profit
off of it
they work hand-in-glove with the base commanders and the deputy base
commanders
if you talk to deputy base commanders now increasingly more and more women are
becoming deputy base commanders it's one of the
steps up in your career in the u_s_ military but mainly men
um... that's one of your jobs your job is to deal with the local chamber of
commerce
so it sounds very bland but the local chamber of commerce
around most u_s_ military bases overseas uh... include
uh... the runners of brothels
many of whom in turn
take women
and girls who've been trafficked and there's been some attempt by some women
in the military and some
feminists who
uh... watch the u_s_ military to try and make that visible
i gave a talk once
in front of a lot of military people but i you know they were good
meaning people you can't see people as monsters they were doing their job
and I just said
look i know it's hard for you all to face but
do you realize that you work for an organization that has a prostitution policy
and
i said now I know that's hard to accept but here's the evidence that you all have
a prostitution policy your military doctors
uh... help enforce the compulsory vaginal exams on these women
your base commanders hang women's
pictures upside down if they're thought to be h_i_v_-positive
you know you run buses you have cooperative agreements with local
businesses that are in the sex trade
you have a policy I know you don't want to admit that
let's talk about the sex trade
where are girls being shipped to who's the receiver of girls
well there
we can all name different countries uh... amongst the and they change they
change like where are cars being produced I mean this is an industry
the netherlands
this is now where countries that are importing importing women
but they're girls they they're girls and women girls and women uh...
some countries are both the exporter this is a terrible way to talk it sounds as if
we're talking about sneakers
didn't you bring some type of a chart that you could yes maybe if it came
on the screen we'll take a look and you can at least see where the men are
coming from that go to these countries there's the picture
if the viewers will look at the countries in green that's canada
the u_s_
china that's a new country in green
south
korea that's a new country in green
australia new zealand just off the picture there germany um... the
scandinavian countries all those countries in green are where men come
from so that's american and canadian men chinese men australian men zealand men
they're the men who go to countries for sex tourism
usually quite well organized
brochures airlines hotel packages and so on so all those countries in green
that's where the men go come from to go to countries that are uh... that have
large prostitution industries
thanks thank you cynthia
nata let me ask you this where do these girls end up do they end up in countries
and are they then chained to beds at some of the stories that we hear
about
and live the life of a sex slave
oh yes quite a few cases that's what happens
in india I know that every year
there are around thirteen thousand girls from nepal that come into
bombay
for prostitution
and they are literally slaves prisoners in these tiny tiny rooms where they have
absolutely no chance of escape they may not be chained and beaten every day but initially
they are beaten and chained
and fear is instilled
because that's essential
to maintain these women
nowadays we find that from the new
the new transitional economies
russia
all the eastern european countries there's a huge trafficking of women that is going
to these women are going to germany they are going to the netherlands they are going to
japan
they're going to even some of the south east asian countries where there is a demand
for white women
and what i think is very important for us to understand
we did first start saying that are there treaties and conventions to deal with this problem
i think it's very important to keep in mind that yes it's very critical to have
treaties and conventions and the countries that are receiving should view
these women as women who are were being violated of their basic rights and
not as criminals because right now that's the way they are being viewed as illegal
immigrants people who are overstaying their visas etc.
