The word vexel is a mix of the words "vector" and "pixel".
Because vexels are a form of raster art, it's not as scalable as true vectors.
As you can see, the picture on the left is pixellated unlike the picture at the right,
but when you zoom them out, it looks pretty much the same.
Okay the first thing you need is a picture to work on.
You'll also need a handy dandy photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop.
I'm using CS5.
Okay, here is our picture. Let's zoom it in on the eyes.
Okay.. The first thing we will do is.. we'll make a new layer.
We'll name it "eyes"
It's good practice to name our layers.
Then let's use the pen tool to outline the
white of the eyes.
it takes a lot of patience to
make the outline as smooth as possible.
Now let's fill it in with the colors. Let's choose white.
And there you go! Delete path, and then let's move on to the next part. Now we're gonna outline the iris next.
There we go.
You might not get this right the first time but it's okay. You can retouch 'em afterwards.
There we go. Fill it in with the color closest to the iris..
and there you go.
Okay now let's look at the
white of the eye and
it's a bit imperfect so what we'll do is..
we're gonna
redo that part, we're gonna fill in a little bit more.
We're gonna do the same thing as we did before.
Let's draw a new path,
and then fill it in.
So it looks a little bit
better.
Okay now let's go to the pupils.
New layer,
and then we're going to outline it, just the same as we did before.
and we're gonna fill it in.
Okay!
And then let's look at it with the other features.. there. There's still a bit of imperfection.
Let's retouch it,
fill it in..
okay.
and then we're gonna go for the shiny part of the eyes.
we're gonna do the same thing. Fill it white, later on.
There you go.
Okay, now let's use the
magic wand tool to select the eyelashes.
New layer..
then we're gonna select.
It's a bit messy to use this, but
we could also use other select tools like
the rectangular marquee tool. Just
don't make it a little
too rough.
So select, reselect,
and then when you're done, what you do is
you press "M" or choose the rectangular marquee tool,
and then you right click.
And then we refine the edges.
Here you can
change the settings.
Then you right click again, and then fill.
So there you have it. There's the original photo,
and here's the finished product.
