It is contemporary work, it's work that's on the edge, we're not working in typical
medium's most the time, it's more about just
showing that Austin does have a contemporary side that you don't see as often as you should
We decided to get together and
shoot, just take photos, just really no agenda,
just let's go have fun, let's take some photos, that's kind of the way we work.
For the show I really want to focus on sculpture and I really wanted to push that
aspect of my work. This is almost a left turn for a lot of the work I've displayed in
the past. I've always loved working with sculpture but it's never really been
that strong of work for me. It made sense for where I'm at right now as an artist
and for the space itself
so to me it was a great opportunity to show a lot of the random experiments I've been
working on in my space. First I do a photo. I take photos
and it's bodies moving with fabric. And what I wanted to do, I wanted to capture
the energy of the body and I wanted to make sure it had a really strong photo
that I can take
from and break it down and then turn that into a 3-D piece.
I read this book called The Shallows. How the internet is affcting our brains
so when I came across this concept that part of our brain is the watchdog for
the thief, that's the other part of our brains, it's like, it's one brain but it kind of has
multiple personalities.
I figured it's a great concept for someone to decide well,
well then who's the watchdog and the who is the thief?
We steal from differnet artists and we steal from different periods of time
and we steal from what we see outside. So I thought, well that's interesting you know
we're part of
our environment and we take things and then the watchdog part
was, well we're going to work together and we're going to work separate,
so you do what you want to do, I do what I want to do, and let's make sure that
we're both on the same
wavelength, so we're watching out for each other, making sure that the work was going to work
together for the show.
Hector always brings a level of professionalism to how we approach his
gallery spaces.
I'm rougher around the edges, so when we collaborate together he's good at
helping me kind of
hone down what I want to do\ and clean it up a bit
and I'm good at helping him get a little messy with his work as well.
