This video takes you through the process of creating a large number of student accounts...
this is a straightforward process - much simpler than it used to be!
I'm going to show you how to create student accounts - but the same basic process works for creating teacher accounts too.
In the tabs along the top of your profile select "Manage my class"
If you are a school manager the tab will be called "Manage my school".
Clicking this tab enables you to create individual student and teacher accounts,
or you can easily create a large number of student and teacher accounts from an upload.
We're going to learn how to import a .csv to create student accounts on a Teacher profile
what we learn here can be applied to all other kinds of accounts too.
We start by clicking the "Import students from .csv file" option...
On this page there is a lot of detailed information on how to prepare and upload your .csv file.
These are the different columns that you need to have in your file.
There is also a link to a help page...
where you will find this demonstration video,
as well as a blank template you can downoad and use.
So I'm going to download that template,
When we open it up in EXCEL,
there are the four columns required for the upload.
All of these columns must be completed for every student.
Here are my examples;
Each student has a unique email address - important so the site can communicate with them
this enables them to reset passwords, and receive updates when their material gets a comment.
just like they would in any other online community.
If your students don't have an existing email account, this is a useful teaching opportunity -
get them to create a free gmail or hotmail account
this is a good opportunity to teach them the importance of a professional and grown-up email address!
then we add their first name and last name, and finally the date of birth,
This must be formatted correctly Year - Month - Date. If it is not formatted correctly, it will not work.
Excel can be difficult about this - so you can reformat those cells as text.
it is imperative to get this right - or the computer will not be able to read the upload.
You must ensure that you then save the document like this...
select "save as"
give the file a title,
but do not save it as an excel workbook (xls),
from the drop down menu choose to save it as a .csv (comma delimited)
Excel will query this, but do make sure that you click yes.
Now we are ready to upload your .csv file to the site
choose the file that you have just created,
then click "next".
The site gives you a preview of all the accounts that it is going to create,
check the records, and when you are happy with them, click "Import"
this bar indicates that the site is working,
this bar indicates that the site is working,
and you will get a message confirming that the accounts have been created.
If you return to your profile, and click "manage my class"
where you will find the new accounts.
